Join us as an entry level Operator-in-Training (OIT). This is a great opportunity to learn and grow within American Water.
The Operator‑in‑Training (OIT) performs semi‑skilled to skilled labor in the operation and maintenance of two wastewater treatment plants (WWTP), three pump stations and two collection systems. The OIT assists the lead operator who serves as the Direct Responsible Charge (DRC) and one other plant operator with operation, preventative maintenance, and repair duties associated with an aerated lagoon, an extended aeration process, and the associated pump stations and collection systems.
The OIT assists the DRC with process controls and performs plant operational duties including monitoring, sampling, troubleshooting, and optimizing treatment performance.
Posted salary range: $28/hr – $38/hr

Key Accountabilities- Complete tasks assigned by the DRC in a timely and professional manner.
- After on‑the‑job training, perform process control tests and basic laboratory analyses such as pH, dissolved oxygen, BOD, and suspended solids.
- Monitor and maintain screening, biological treatment, and filtration processes, as well as an injection well used for effluent disposal.
- Operate and maintain all supporting equipment including pumps, compressors, chemical feeders, and blowers.
- Assist the DRC and staff with ordering chemicals and materials, data collection, record keeping, groundskeeping, and herbicide spraying.
- Assist the DRC with unscheduled repairs of plant and pump station equipment.
- Attend all safety training and apply safe work practices consistently.
- Work a schedule that includes one weekend day and be available for flexible hours, substitutions for absent operators or lab technicians, and on‑call duties for after‑hour emergencies.
- Basic understanding of mechanics and hydraulics.
- Knowledge of wastewater treatment facility and pump station operations, methods, and maintenance requirements.
- Knowledge of safety practices for electrical and mechanical industrial equipment.
- Knowledge of common procedures, materials, tools, equipment, and safety hazards in the assigned area.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills with internal and external stakeholders.
- Independent work capability and resourcefulness in selecting tools and materials.
- Safe use of hand and power tools.
- Judgement in operational duties and maintaining effective relationships with staff, the DRC, management, and vendors.
- Open communication with the DRC regarding plant performance and recommendations for corrective action.
- Ability to read and interpret gauges, recording devices, and plant instrumentation.
- Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date maintenance records.
- Legible writing and accurate simple calculations.
- Lift and move up to 50 pounds; stand, bend, tree, shovel, sweep, walk, and climb as required.
- Operate company motor vehicles and equipment safely.
- Work outdoors under all weather conditions, including summer heat.
- Use computer and mobile devices to analyze and report plant data.
- Obtain Grade I certification within two years from hire and pursue higher levels as allowed by experience and training.
- High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
- Years of experience required for the various operator levels:
- Operator OIT – obtain operator certificate within State‑mandated guidelines.
- Operator 1 – 1–3 years experience.
- Operator 2 – 3–5 years experience.
- Operator 3 – 5–8 years experience.
- Sr. Operator – 8+ years experience.
- Salary will be commensurate with experience and grade of license held.
- Hawaii Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator I license preferred or ability to obtain within 2 years of hire.
