Job Description & How to Apply Below
Position:  Principal Network Engineer (Satellites)
SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not. Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars.

The spacecraft engineering team in Hawthorne is hiring for R&D satellite programs that are pushing the boundaries of in-space capabilities. Our missions support scientific research, classified national security space and commercial opportunities. As we expand our classified mission manifest we are looking for an experienced network engineer to define the architecture of our next generation constellation designs. As a Principal Network Engineer, you will demonstrate extreme ownership of the network with deep understanding if its functionality, design, requirements, and see it through all aspects of its life cycle from inception to flight. You will also work with many other teams, customers, and partners while thinking at a system level to ensure that your design is viable, extensible, and forward looking. This is the chance to use the lessons learned from the past decades of network design and build a system that will deploy fast at a global scale with very aggressive development timelines.

We're looking for people who want to dive in, get their hands dirty, and remain afraid to make important decisions in our data driven culture. Every day we push the limits of what is possible through innovation, determination, and teamwork and we're only just beginning.

* Design network architectures from the ground up that meet the needs of commercial, civil, and national security customers
* Define interfaces, identify standards, and document network operations to ensure maximum flexibility for on-boarding to the network
* Work closely with flight avionics engineers to design and fly hardware to operate the flight network
* Work closely with ground system engineers to spec, procure, and install hardware to operate the terrestrial segment of the network
* Coordinate with network engineers from other constellations to integrate multiple networks
* Manage a global mesh network with constantly reconfiguring laser-based communications links
* Manage and expand network interconnections, network co-location sites and points of presence (POPs)
* Maintain the uptime and performance of the ground network
* Improve network performance based upon system performance metrics

* 10+ years of professional hands on experience operating enterprise class networks
* Operational experience in a Linux production environment
* Experience with Python and/or bash scripting

* Bachelor's degree in a technical or engineering discipline
* Deep understanding of service provider networks including but not limited to:
* Connectivity (Ethernet, WDM, IPv4 and IPv6)
* Switching (MPLS, QinQ)
* Routing (BGP, OSPF, IS-IS)
* Subscriber Management (BNG, RADIUS/AAA, QoS, BSS/OSS integration)
* Network security and Anti-DDoS measures
* Internet services (DNS, DHCP, NTP, etc.)

* Familiarity with network health monitoring systems such as Observium, Solarwinds or Nagios
* Experience with hands-on work in bringing up network infrastructure
* Experience creating documentation and procedures
* Ability to run projects independently
* Experience working on wireless networks
* Experience working on software defined networking (SDN) and/or network function virtualization (NFV)
* Cisco, Juniper or other industry certifications

* TS or TS/SCI clearance or willingness to pursue a clearance is required. Note that an active clearance may provide the opportunity for you to work on sensitive SpaceX missions. If so, you will be subject to pre-employment drug and random drug and alcohol testing
* Must be willing to do some travel (~20%) domestically and internationally in the future when needed
* Must be available for on-call rotations

* To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) you must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State. Learn more about the ITAR here.
