Position: Electrician - BC-10

Installs, maintains, and repairs electrical wiring systems, electrical and mechanical equipment, and appurtenant fixtures; performs related duties as required.

Working Hours

Monday - Friday; 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Special Working Conditions

Applicants must be available for stand‑by duty and for immediate response in emergency situations (after hours/days off).

Responsibilities
  • Installs conduits, transformers, traffic signals, pull boxes, plugs, convenience outlets, and switches.
  • Rewires buildings.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs pumps, motors, and various other types of electrical equipment and apparatus.
  • Repairs and replaces broken or defective parts in motors, switches, and fixtures.
  • Locates, tests, and repairs trouble in electrical circuits and equipment.
  • Replaces fuses and incandescent and fluorescent lights.
  • Plans electrical installations.
  • Inspects traffic signal and street lighting systems.
  • Inspects and repairs switch gears, registers, capacitor banks, power circuits, blowers, generators, and other related electrical equipment.
  • Creates sketches of proposed wiring systems to facilitate repair work.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints and working plans.
  • Estimates cost, time, and materials needed for repair and maintenance work.
  • Reports need for major repairs.
  • May supervise others; supervises trade helpers as assigned.
  • May operate a vehicle to transport materials and employees; may operate a heavy truck with aerial bucket (GVW of 33,000 pounds).
  • Performs services in other trades when not utilized as an electrician.
Training and Experience
  • Completion of the eighth grade.
  • Four (4) years of experience as an apprentice or helper under a journeylevel electrician.
  • Possession of a valid State of Hawaiʻi Journey level Electrician's License at time of filing. (Scan and attach a copy of your valid license to your application.)
  • Possession of a valid State of Hawaiʻi Driver License (Class
    3) or another valid comparable driver license at time of filing. (You will be required to submit your valid driver's license at time of hire.)
  • For CDL positions: at the time of job interview, candidates must possess a good driving record certified by a traffic abstract confirming no DUI convictions, license revocations, or suspensions for three (3) years preceding and no moving violations for one (1) year preceding. A current traffic abstract is valid for 30 days from the date of issuance by the district court.
Notes
  • As applicable to the position, possession of a valid State of Hawaiʻi Commercial Driver License of the appropriate class with the appropriate endorsement(s) is required prior to completion of probation. (The immediate vacancy with the Department of Public Works requires a valid State of Hawaiʻi Commercial Driver License Class B prior to completion of probation.)
  • As applicable to the position, possession of a current Department of Transportation Medical Examiner’s Certificate prior to appointment. Examination

All applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be assigned a score of 70 points. An education and experience evaluation will be conducted based on the applicant’s training, education and experience as presented in the application.
