    The Senior Manager, Enterprise Risk Management role reports to the Global Head of Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) and is located in New York, NY / Charlottesville VA, / London, UK / Hong Kong, Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China. The Senior Manager, ERM will play a lead role in the development, analysis, and documentation of CFA Institute’s Global ERM Program to include identification of risks, risk assessments/risk control self-assessments (RCSA), policies, procedures, reporting/monitoring metrics, issues and recommendations.

    Entails a focus on and understanding of subject matter areas such as risk management (financial, operational, compliance, etc.), business resiliency, and technology/information security. Incumbent will have exposure across lines of business and the opportunity to work with senior management to create and implement innovative solutions to identify and mitigate potential risks to the organization globally and regionally. Incumbent will provide risk insight and guide management on risk issues and serves as a “dot connector” and a trusted advisor to the CFA Institute across its three lines of defense.

    The Senior Enterprise Risk Manager has accountability for supporting the Risk Policy, Risk Appetite and ERM Framework globally across CFA Institute. The key components of the Framework include assessing and approving significant change, ensuring the risks of the proposal have been appropriately identified and addressed, whilst facilitating and maintaining Risk and Control Self Assessments and driving Live Risk management practices. The incumbent will also be leading issue management activities and related investigations while reviewing critical control design and performance as assessed by the control and risk owners.

    The role requires a deep understanding of enterprise risk management, and the ability to exercise exceptional judgement to effectively manage risk.

    This position is required to handle highly confidential matters and materials with discretion. The responsibilities of this position includes, but is not limited to the following:

  • Risk Culture, Governance and Oversight:

    Support Head of ERM to institutionalize the risk oversight and governance structure across the organization.

    Influence CFA Institute employees to adopt risk management principles of risk ownership, accountability and transparency that promotes a strong risk aware culture that commensurate with CFA Institute’s Risk Appetite. Work closely with stakeholders across the organization to build and enhance the Global Enterprise Risk Management portfolio of efforts to raise the risk posture of the organization in accordance with CFA Institute’s Risk Policy and risk governance and oversight committees (Internal and Board).

    Develop and deliver audience appropriate ERM trainings to enhance the “culture” of risk management and ensure application of risk management in business processes are embedded in the organization.

    Positions ERM as a ‘strategy enabling’ capability, helping the organization understand the risks that could impact the organization’s strategy or a function’s objectives as well as identify opportunities.
  • Risk Partner


    Build, maintain, and enhance business relations with the first, second and third lines of defense to ensure a smooth implementation of the global ERM program activities across the organization.

    Partner with other regional/functional areas to identify potential risks and collaborate effectively to achieve ERM program objectives.

    Provide advice and influence risk management strategies and educate risk owners on best practices. Analyze information gathered from on-going collaboration with functional areas to develop and implement risk solutions to ensure CFA Institute’s continued stability and success. Work closely with counterparts in internal audit and other second line of defense risk areas. Maintain confidentiality of confidential and sensitive information associated with position.
  • As the Senior Manager, Enterprise Risk Management - Governance and Risk Reporting, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Provide frequent updates to the Global Head of Enterprise Risk Management to present to the internal and Board Risk Committee(s), in addition to assisting executive management and the Board of Governors in fulfilling their respective risk oversight and governance responsibilities.
  • Aggregate Enterprise Risk Profile on a periodic basis to highlight ERM’s independent views of Enterprise Risk, key drivers, trends, forward looking outlook, points of escalation and differences of risk opinion with front line if applicable. Coordinate across all financial and non-financial risk domains to bring perspectives together at the Global Enterprise level.
  • Provide leadership for the development, implementation, maintenance and monitoring of the enterprise’s Risk appetite. Develop process to tie Risk Profile to Risk Appetite and work with front line to outline necessary “path to green” actions to bring back within appetite if applicable.
  • Develop and monitor Risk Appetite key risk indicators and key performance indicators (KRIs/KPIs) to ensure that the Leadership Team makes information risk aware decisions. Responsible for developing, monitoring and tracking of business metrics to monitor and evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of risk mitigation controls and activities in accordance with CFA Institute’s Risk Appetite.
  • Lead the development of reports/dashboards to senior management on ERM activities and potential risks. Manage the annual risk assessment data gathering process and development/maintenance of risk heat maps, dashboards and risk registers. Assemble, compile, analyze information, and resolve errors/inconsistencies in data from various business partners to ensure consistency in enterprise reporting
  • Primary point of contact with the risk process automation efforts for ERM. Develop and produce routine standard and ad hoc enterprise risk reporting. Participate in evaluating and developing system/process enhancements to improve the efficiency of reporting; assist in the coordination and of the execution of process enhancements. Ensure optimal use of Governance Risk and Compliance (GRC) system globally.
  • Develop strong partnerships with other departments to aid in business partners’ understanding of underlying business drivers that may affect reporting. Perform ad hoc analyses to support changes to reporting/enhancements. As well as assisting in implementing changes based on the analysis completed. Provide feedback to management regarding results.
  • Maintain confidentiality and integrity while managing sensitive matters.
  • The skills and experience required for this role are:

  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
    Minimum 10 years of experience in risk management within the financial services industry or equivalent in a global capacity.
  • Fluency in English required, knowledge of additional languages would be useful.
  • Excellent PowerPoint skills along with the use of tools like GRC systems, Tableau, etc. for report building
  • Must demonstrate outstanding stewardship and relationship building/management skills to expand the mission of CFA Institute;
    Demonstrated integrity and ability to maintain principles under internal and/or external pressure.
  • Very high level of organizational and time management skills;
    High level of competency in juggling competing priorities and changing expectations
  • Excellent interpersonal & communication skills including a professional and diplomatic demeanor; skilled in turning complex data into compelling and easy to understand concepts

    Willingness to ask questions rather than just follow directions is required
  • Experience in project management, with skills necessary to interpret what is needed for the success of a project and to create appropriate schedules for timely delivery
