The Hawaii State Hospital provides care to adult patients with substance abuse disorders and serious mental illnesses referred by the courts. The hospital offers comprehensive psychiatric assessments, treatment, and rehabilitation. Staff work closely with each other and with each patient to ensure a supportive therapeutic environment. LPNs provide medications to patients and assist nursing staff with care and treatment of all patients.
This position works in a hospital or clinic that provides care and treatment to patients who are mentally ill. The primary purpose of this position is to perform practical nursing care and related technical work in the care, treatment and rehabilitation of mentally ill individuals. The position may work on rotating shifts.
Qualifications- Legal Authorization to Work: The State of Hawaii requires all persons seeking employment with the government of the State to be citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.
- Prerequisite Qualifications for Entry Level:
- A. Knowledge of the nursing process, body structure and function, principles of asepsis, universal precautions, infection control, principles of administering medications, patient preparation, data-gathering techniques, interpersonal communication skills, patient safety, patient rights, individualized care, developmental influences, team participation, therapeutic procedures, specialized equipment, optimal body functioning, prevention of complications, body mechanics, assistive devices, comfort measures, signs of emotional and mental health problems, chemical dependency, adaptive and maladaptive behavior, sensory deprivation and overload, abusive and self‑destructive behavior, concepts of wellness, reproduction and human sexuality, birthing and parenting, growth and development including dying and death.
- B. Ability to apply practical nursing principles, communicate effectively in English, maintain records, respond to emergencies, follow instructions, establish relationships.
- Prerequisite Qualifications for Full Performance Level: In addition to the entry level qualifications:
- A. Knowledge of practical nursing principles and practice, patient age groups and developmental characteristics.
- B. Ability to independently provide patient care appropriate to age and condition; observe, record, and report changes in patient condition.
- Physical Requirements: Applicants must be physically able to perform essential duties. Sensory: read orders, measure medications, observe skin changes, hear via stethoscope. Coordination and dexterity: pour/measure medications, change dressings, administer injections. Strength and stamina: lift, transfer, reposition patients, subdue uncontrolled patients. Mobility: move freely throughout work setting and respond quickly to emergencies.
- Experience: None for entry level; one year progressively responsible work experience as an LPN for full performance.
- License: Current State of Hawaii LPN license required.
