Overview
This role supports safe, efficient barge loading and related operations at a facility that loads and unloads barges and trucks. It is a general laborer position with a variety of duties based on daily operational needs, including cleaning and repair of barges where applicable.
Responsibilities- Fully participate in the company Safety Program and attend daily pre-shift meetings.
- Perform duties in compliance with OSHA, company safety, and environmental regulations (ISO where applicable); wear appropriate PPE for the task.
- Perform deckhand responsibilities (e.g., reading drafts, opening/closing lids, tying off barges).
- Perform barge loading duties (e.g., loading barges to meet draft and quality requirements and overseeing deckhand(s)); generally the duty of the most qualified person(s).
- Transfer, load, and move grain to appropriate locations, where applicable.
- Maintain grain quality during storage and transfer.
- Complete documentation timely, accurately, and legibly.
- General clean-up including sweeping, shoveling, washing, painting, and other housekeeping tasks.
- Perform preventative maintenance and/or repairs, where applicable.
- Depending on facility and location, may unload barges, clean barges, move product to storage, load trucks with heavy equipment, load rail, and operate/monitor/shut down dryers; operate a variety of heavy equipment.
- Other duties as assigned.

Education
Required — High school diploma or equivalent, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience
Required – None. Preferred — 1 year of experience in an industrial environment with a dependable work record.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities- Basic mathematical skills (add, subtract, multiply, divide).
- Effective interpersonal, oral and written communication skills with the ability to interact with all levels inside and outside the organization.
- Ability to complete documentation requirements.
- Ability to follow directions and use logical thought processes to interpret oral and written instructions, and troubleshoot problems.
- Ability to work well independently and in a team environment.
- Ability to use tools appropriate for the assigned task.
- Commitment to exceptional customer service, both internal and external.
The physical demands and requirements frequencies vary by location and operational needs.
- Balance, bend, stoop, twist, crouch, crawl, kneel and squat (frequently/continuously).
- Climb stairs and ladders (and work at significant heights).
- Concentrate on tasks without distraction, continuously.
- Distinguish grain grade, color, odor, and damage characteristics in grain samples (at some facilities).
- Identify problems with grain using vision and smell as applicable.
- Enter information into a computer (observations, etc.).
- Reach and grasp objects frequently.
- Lift/push/pull 50 lbs. occasionally to continuously, depending on daily needs.
- Meet PPE requirements and fit testing where applicable.
- Pass required testing under FRA and DOT where applicable.
- Work in confined spaces and on barge surfaces with potential exposure to water.
- Stand, walk, and work extended hours, weekends, holidays, and/or alternate shifts as needed.
- Work in environments with dust around grain and other bulk products, and outdoors in extreme weather conditions.
- Maintain acute awareness of surroundings and adapt quickly to changes.
- Visual and depth perception requirements for task performance, and identify grain-related issues.
Requires rotating 12-hour shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and/or extended hours at certain locations.
Environmental ConditionsThe work environment may be inside or outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Frequently required to use personal protective equipment. Travel may be required (5–20%).
Compensation — The expected base pay range is $18.00 - $24.00 per hour. Actual pay offered may vary by location, knowledge, skills, and experience.
