PhD-student position

Employment for the period of 36 months in the framework of the FWF-funded project P31787-N37 "The effect of volatiles on reaction rim growth dynamics" .

Applications are sought for a 3-years PhD-student position at the Institute of Mineralogy andPetrography, University of Innsbruck, Austria on the subject "Thermochemistry of the ternary system K2O-CaO-SiO2 - implications for the field of applied mineralogy".

Solid biomass is nowadays considered to be an important sustainable energy source. However, the combustion of biomass for the production of heat and electricity results in enormous amounts of ashes and/or slags for which utilization options are eagerly required. Within this context the system K2O-CaO-SiO2 comes into play because it can be used as a model system for the interpretation of the relevant high-temperature processes and reactions. The central goal of this project is a complete reinvestigation of this ternary system. An important aspect will be the combination of experimental equilibrium studies with measured thermodynamic properties and state-of-the art thermodynamic modeling within the same project. The project will involve active collaborations with other research groups in Austria (Salzburg University) and Germany (FZ Jülich).Generally speaking, we will try to bridge the gap between fundamental research on a ternary oxide system and applied science.

The project is funded by the Austrian Science Foundation (FWF). Monthly gross salary is Euro2.071,00. The successful candidate has a degree (Diplom, MSc) in geosciences, mineralogy, crystallography, chemistry or related subjects.

Further information can be obtained from Prof. Volker Kahlenberg. Applications should be sent by E-mail to Please include scanned copies of relevant documents.

Applications will be considered until September 30th .
