Responsibilities

The position of Nurse Practitioner II in the Department of Surgery, Division of Emergency General Surgery requires a highly competent and independent yet team‑oriented individual who will be immersed in the management and coordination of all inpatient care for the department. Duties include assessing health needs, planning and evaluating care of all patients on the emergency general surgery service (including those in the surgical intensive care unit, step‑down unit, telemetry unit and medical‑surgical units).

The Nurse Practitioner will work closely with residents, fellows and attending surgeons, performing handoffs at the beginning and end of shifts, seeing inpatients, providing consults in the ED, and coordinating care among team members, including social work, case management, therapy and other medical and surgical specialties.

Surgical consultations will include assessments, decisions on indications for surgery and preparation for surgery. The Nurse Practitioner will be responsible for the care and organization of procedures (including scheduling operations, interventional procedures, etc.) and follow‑up, obtaining consults as needed, admitting and discharging patients (including admission orders, initial H&P, discharge summary, instructions, and medications) when appropriate. The Nurse Practitioner will review critical labs/imaging, follow‑up results with patient and medical staff, obtain comprehensive medical histories, perform initial and periodic physical examinations/assessments, and explore patient’s interpretation of health needs.

The Nurse Practitioner will also have an independent clinic on Wednesday and Friday afternoons that will include postoperative patients, some follow‑up patients and occasionally pre‑operative patients.

The Nurse Practitioner will triage calls and issues through the clinic and call center for emergency general surgery patients, including EDD form and disability forms. The Nurse Practitioner will facilitate patient throughput through the system and hospitalization, demonstrate advanced medical and surgical knowledge, clinical competence, sound clinical judgment, professional communication skills, timely and compliant documentation, and is responsible for professional development and competency validation.

Procedures may include, but are not limited to, removal of drains, drainage of abscesses, dressing changes, including wound‑vacuum dressings. Under the supervision of the Chief of Emergency General Surgery and guided by applicable policies and procedures, the Nurse Practitioner will participate in the comprehensive care of patients in the ambulatory or inpatient settings and provide multi‑disciplinary care coordination, treatment, education, monitoring, and communication with patients and referring physicians.

  • Functions as appropriate to the scope of practice, including management of chronic stable medical conditions, routine care, acute or critical care, and medical and surgical procedures per approved standardized procedure. Familiarity with state statutes for licensing is necessary.
