The responsibilities of the Utility employee are to assist the mechanics in the maintenance, daily cleaning, washing, fueling, and inspection of Authority vehicles. Duties may also include cleaning of the Authority buildings, grounds, and other property throughout the service area.

The importance of the work performed by the Utility employee cannot be overemphasized. Substandard work and inattention to detail will soon be noticed in the appearance and operation of Authority vehicles and property. Every effort must be made to see that this work is done precisely as outlined below.

Daily Bus Work
  • Bus Sweeping
    • Carefully sweep the interior, paying special attention to areas under seats, around seat legs and stanchions, and the driver’s compartment.
  • Interior Inspection
    • Inspect for cut or torn seats, lost and found items, vandalism, or equipment defects.
    • Report defects on Defect forms; check proof of insurance and registration forms. Winter only: check salt supply and refill as needed.
  • Clean Dash
    • Thoroughly clean the dashboard and discard any non‑essential papers, used transfers, or other litter.
  • Handrails and Stanchions
    • Wipe all passenger handrails and stanchions clean.
  • Fuel Bus
    • Fuel all vehicles at the end of each operating day with the proper grade of gasoline or diesel fuel. Record the amount and type of fuel dispensed on the Vehicle Fuel Form.
  • Wash Bus
    • Wash and rinse the exterior of each bus to remove road soil, salt, etc. (Omit when weather conditions allow buses to remain clean.)
  • Clean Windows
    • Clean all windows inside and out.
  • Mechanical Inspection
    • Engine Oil – Daily
    • Transmission Fluid – Daily
    • Coolant – Daily
    • Tires – Hammer Check – Daily
    • Gauge Check – Once per week
    • Wear Check – Daily
    • Lights – Daily
    • Battery – Once per week
    • Fan Belts – Daily
    • Power Steering – Daily
  • Empty Farebox Vault
    • Remove the current vault and insert a new vault each day. Record changes on the Bus Vault Form. Locked vaults are stored in the Vault Room.
  • Servicing of Vehicle Tires and Rims
    • Mounting and dismounting as required.
  • Parking of Vehicles
    • Arrange vehicles in the bus barn to allow the first buses in operation the next day to be closest to the exit.
  • Red‑Tagged Vehicles
    • All vehicles held for repair will have a red tag on the steering wheel describing the required repair.
Building Maintenance
  • Clean Restroom – as needed per management request: sweep floors, clean sinks and toilet bowls, install new tissue and towels, clean mirrors, empty wastebaskets, and clean walls and doors as needed.
  • Empty Trash Receptacles
  • Clean Bus Maintenance and Storage Area – directed by the Maintenance Manager.
  • Hose down the Bus Storage floor – directed by the Maintenance Manager.
  • Clean Building Windows – clean all exterior glass and windows in Administration and shop area; skylights as needed.
  • Responsible for Night "Security" Lock‑Up – alarms, doors, and gates.
  • Responsible for taking both stick and pump readings
Outside Maintenance
  • Cleaning of Sidewalks and Driveways – sweep sidewalks and pick up trash and debris as needed.
  • Cleaning of Passenger Shelters – weekly cleaning of shelters, windows, check for loose screws and vandalism, trim grass in summer, and wash the entire shelter monthly.
  • Snow Removal – clear snow from walks and driveways around buildings, doorways, apply ice control product, and clear snow from passenger boarding areas at the Downtown Transfer Center, bus shelters, and designated bus stops. Snowplows and snow blowers operated by authorized personnel only or after proper training.
Major Bus Cleaning
  • Scrub ceiling and walls – remove all dust, grease, and finger marks.
  • Clean windows and all interior glass.
  • Clean destination sign window – open the destination sign and clean from inside.
  • Scrub dashboard and driver’s compartment.
  • Remove cushions where possible – clean behind cushions and scrub cushions.
  • Scrub wheel housings – front and rear, and rear seat riser.
  • Scrape up chewing gum from the floor – use a putty knife (do not damage the rubber floor).
  • Scrub floor and steps – pay special attention to corners and areas along walls and under seats.
Miscellaneous Maintenance
  • Other types of maintenance or tasks directed by management (painting, lawn mowing, or yard work).
