Manager, Community Education Position Overview

The Manager, Community Education reports to the AVP Students and is responsible for the planning and development of processes, and implementation of community-based education programs and projects in concert with NVIT policies and processes. This role is carried out in accordance with the NVIT Elder Protocols, a living guide that shapes not only what work is done, but how it is carried.

The Manager is expected to walk with strength, honour the people they travel with, protect spirit, and create balance in all aspects of Community Education. Through respectful engagement with communities, Elders, learners, and partners, this role ensures that NVIT’s presence in community reflects humility, accountability, and care. Guided by the Elder teaching to “listen to the story,” the Manager ensures that community voices, lived experience, and reciprocal relationships shape the design, delivery, and evaluation of all community education initiatives.

  • Plan, coordinate, and implement community education programs and projects with clarity, rigour, and high standards.
  • Develop project objectives, work plans, and timelines that reflect accountability and pride in the work.
  • Manage project budgets responsibly and transparently, demonstrating stewardship of resources.
  • Oversee project logistics including delivery locations, instructor coordination, travel, accommodation, contracts, and invoicing.

  • Build and sustain respectful, reciprocal relationships with communities, leaders, Elders, instructors, students, and partners.
  • Conduct meaningful community consultation to ensure programs reflect community needs and priorities.
  • Liaise with internal departments (Enrolment Services, HR, Finance, Academic areas) to support coordinated program delivery.
  • Work closely with community partners to develop and deliver community-based education initiatives.

  • Act with integrity, transparency, and follow-through in all project, staffing, and partnership matters.
  • Document decisions, agreements, and outcomes clearly to ensure accountability to communities and NVIT.
  • Provide NVIT orientation and guidance to communities, including institutional policies, supports, and cultural responsibilities.
  • Support the well-being and spirit of staff, instructors, and partners through respectful leadership.

  • Centre learners and communities in all planning, delivery, and evaluation decisions.
  • Create learning environments and partnerships that foster safety, welcome, and balance.
  • Balance institutional requirements with community realities to ensure programs are responsive and sustainable.
  • Model grounded, relational leadership that recognizes when to lead and when to step back.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field. Combination of education and professional experience may be considered.
  • Minimum three years of administrative experience.
  • Proven ability to plan, implement, and manage projects.
  • Proven experience in Aboriginal program/project development.
  • Demonstrated understanding of Indigenous ways of knowing and community-based approaches to education.
  • Respect for the role of Elders and the guidance they provide within NVIT.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a complex, community-centered environment.
