Principal Controls Engineer – Data Center Controls
We are seeking a talented, highly motivated, results‑driven Engineer to lead the design, development, and delivery of robust, production‑ready control solutions for data center platforms. The role focuses on data center HVAC systems, including chillers, cooling plants, fan coil units, liquid cooling solutions, and supervisory plant controllers.
Key Job Responsibilities- Lead the design, development, and delivery of robust, production‑ready control solutions for data center platforms by ensuring compliance with customer and technical requirements, industry standards, and best practices.
- Define scalable control architecture for data center HVAC platforms.
- Lead the design and development of advanced control strategies that optimize performance, energy efficiency, and system robustness, including supervisory optimal control, model predictive control, robust and adaptive control, fault‑tolerance control, etc.
- Lead decomposition of system‑level requirements into control functional specifications.
- Support the development and calibration of physics‑based plant models.
- Support system‑level commissioning activities, including startup strategy definition, control sequence validation, and tuning in real operating environments.
- Drive project execution by setting clear technical goals, managing timelines, and coordinating teams.
- Master of Science in Control Systems, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Chemical Engineering.
- 15+ years of advanced controls system experience.
- PhD.
- Experience with data center cooling or high‑reliability plant‑level HVAC control system designs.
- Proficient knowledge of controls engineering foundations, including feedback control, linear/nonlinear control, multivariable control, system identification, and constrained optimization and predictive control.
- Proven experience implementing model predictive control, or optimization‑based supervisory control in real‑time energy‑efficient system design.
- Experience in advanced estimation techniques, including moving horizon estimation in real‑time systems.
- Familiarity with real‑time optimization algorithms and associated modeling approaches.
- Experience commissioning of chiller plants, liquid cooling systems, supervisory plant controls.
- Proficient in the use of MATLAB‑based toolsets including Simulink to design, implement, and test embedded controls algorithms.
- Excellent communication skills and a proven track record of delivering results through effective teamwork.
- Experience in requirements management and system integration, specifically test strategies across model‑in‑the‑loop (MIL), software‑in‑the‑loop (SIL), and hardware‑in‑the‑loop (HIL) domains.
- Knowledge of acausal modeling languages such as Modelica.
The annual salary for this position is between $ – $ annually. Factors which may affect pay within this range include, but are not limited to, skills, education, experience, and other unique qualifications of the successful candidate.
Other CompensationThis position is entitled to short‑term cash incentives, subject to plan requirements.
