General Surgery in East Kent Hospitals is at an exciting period of innovation and development. At William Harvey Hospital we have a highly specialised and equipped colorectal department offering cancer resections, benign pathology treatment including IBD and endoscopy. The Upper GI team offers laparoscopic cholecystectomy including bile duct exploration, anti-reflux surgery, achalasia treatment and splenectomy. The team consists of 8 colorectal consultants and 3 upper GI consultants.
There are 12 registrars, 9 SHOs and 6 F1 doctors. The department is looking to expand the services offered in line with current innovation and technological advances.
Due to the large catchment area, our emergency take provides the applicant with good acute exposure and plentiful emergency operative opportunities. Our team has a burgeoning research portfolio, including high-profile national studies. We work closely with other specialties and offer opportunities to combine specialisms. We also offer a forward‑thinking approach to flexible working and portfolio careers.
Role OverviewThe appointee will have a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge and for the administrative duties associated with that care. They will also develop the general surgical services with a specialist interest to support existing services.
Other Responsibilities- Communication. Responsibility for and arrangement of communication and liaison with all other medical and service departments within the hospital, including General Management, Medical Records, and Social Work Department.
- Communication with GPs. Telephone discussion of problems and writing of letters about cases seen in the department.
- Communication with other hospitals. Liaison with other hospitals and special departments in other hospitals.
As you would expect from a large teaching Trust, we prize training doctors, nurses and other health professionals and already work closely with local universities and King's College, University of London. We now have the exciting new opportunity of working with Kent and Medway’s new Medical School, jointly provided by the University of Kent and Canterbury Christchurch University, which opens in September 2020.
