Maintenance Technician / Mechanic, Heavy Equipment Mechanic
Summary
This position is assigned to the Recreation Division;
Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Department;
Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC). It is located at Sigsbee Marina, Naval Air Station Key West. The purpose of this position is to diagnose onboard and outboard diesel and gasoline motor malfunctions, determine repair work required, and repair inboard and outboard motors.
- Diagnose malfunctions of inboard and outboard motors, including electrical systems and geared units, to determine the source of trouble and extent of repairs required using manufacturers’ manuals and specialized testing equipment such as compression testers, analyzers, and test benches.
- Perform tear‑down, adjustment, repair, reassembly, and operational checks on motors, and time and adjust engines to operating tolerances.
- Instruct patrons in all phases of safety regulations concerning the use of boats and motors; collect rental fees and prepare daily cash reports and deposit funds.
- Determine supplies and parts needed for repairs and maintain maintenance records, including man‑hours, materials, and dates of repair, and determine bench stock required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Meet Federal Employment suitability requirements and successfully complete a background investigation.
- Pass the E‑Verify employment‑verification check.
- Hold a valid State driver’s license required to operate motor vehicles.
- Receive salary via Direct Deposit/Electronic Funds Transfer.
- Reside within a 50‑mile radius of the hiring base at the time of hire.
- Obtain CPR, First Aid, National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NAS BLA) Safe Boating Certification, or equivalent within 90 days of hire.
- Be willing to work irregular hours, including early shift, late shift, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Be willing to work a part‑time schedule of 20 to 34 hours per week.
- Be able to lift or carry loads/items up to 45 pounds.
- Comply with the REAL requirement for access to Government Facilities.
- One year of specialized experience directly related to diagnosing and repairing inboard and outboard motors, equivalent to the next lower level in the normal line of progression.
- Thorough knowledge of inboard and outboard motors and their components, including electrical systems.
- Ability to use specialized testing equipment (analyzers, test benches, etc.) and reference material such as job orders, work sheets, technical manuals, and manufacturer’s manuals.
- Males must be registered or exempt from Selective Service.
- Must succeed in a probationary period if required.
- Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.
- Must possess a Social Security Card.
- Must maintain a favorable background.
