Your Role In The Mission

The Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) is the company’s technical authority and program owner for radiation protection, radiological safety, and regulatory compliance related to radioactive materials, activated components, byproduct materials, and fusion-related radiation safety programs associated with fusion operations. This role is responsible for developing, implementing, and continuously improving Type One Energy’s radiation safety programs in alignment with NRC, Agreement State, and other applicable regulatory licensing requirements.

The RSO will support radiation safety analysis, licensing and regulatory affairs activities while partnering closely with engineering, physicists, health physicists, and environmental health & safety teams. The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in radiation and radioactive materials control and containment, byproduct material management, regulatory licensing, and radiation safety analysis within nuclear or high-energy physics environments.

Radiation Safety Program Leadership

Serve as the designated Radiation Safety Officer and subject matter expert for all operations radiological safety matters.

Develop, implement, and manage the company’s Radiation Protection Programs (RPPs) in accordance with NRC/Agreement State requirements and industry best practices.

Establish ALARA principles and ensure radiation exposures are minimized and controlled.

Develop policies, procedures, and training for safe handling, storage, transport, and disposal of radioactive materials.

Regulatory Affairs & Licensing

Support regulatory strategy and compliance for radioactive materials and radiological operations.

Support the submission, and maintain licenses, permits, and regulatory filings (e.g., NRC/Agreement State materials licenses, amendments, renewals, inspections).

Act as primary liaison with regulators and inspectors; lead audits, inspections, and corrective action responses.

Support licensing and safety documentation for fusion facilities, test stands, and experimental operations.

Interpret evolving regulatory requirements and ensure proactive compliance.

Radiation Safety Analysis & Technical Assessments

Support Radiation Safety Analyses Including:

  • Shielding calculations
  • Activation and byproduct analysis
  • Dose modeling and exposure assessments
  • Area classification and zoning
  • Radiological hazard evaluations
  • Support facility design reviews to ensure radiological safety by design
  • Participate in the development and validate radiological monitoring and control strategies
What You’ll Need
  • Bachelor’s degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Radiation Protection, Physics, or related field
  • 10+ years of professional experience in radiation protection or radiological safety
  • Direct experience serving as or supporting a Radiation Safety Officer role
  • Strong regulatory affairs and licensing experience with NRC, DOE, or Agreement State frameworks
  • Demonstrated experience with byproduct and/or fission materials
  • Hands-on experience performing radiation safety analysis (shielding, dose modeling, hazard assessments)
  • Knowledge of:
    • 10 CFR 19, 20, 30, 37, 40, 61 (or equivalent DOE standards)
    • ALARA principles and implementation
    • Dosimetry and monitoring systems
    • Radioactive waste management practices
  • Ability to lead regulatory inspections and audits
  • Strong technical writing skills for safety analyses and regulatory submissions
