Under the general guidance of the Telecom Tech Lead and Supervisor, the Telecommunication Technician must demonstrate knowledge and experience working with special tools and be able to operate an OTDR and other basic test equipment. Individual must possess a vast knowledge and understanding of fiber optic systems and data communication. Technician must be capable of designing, installing, trouble shooting and maintaining company telecommunication systems and adjunct equipment. Additionally, individual must demonstrate a clear understanding of the concepts and procedures associated with best practices in the telecommunication field. Responsible for interpreting and utilizing as build inter-connect (IC) drawings or wiring schematics to ensure that the system is cabled correctly. Responsible for the installation, termination, and testing of cable connections that support NIPR/SIPR/VoIP services. Perform Inside Plant, Outside Plant, Cabling Boring & Trenching services. Perform OSP/ISP cable plant troubleshooting, repair, fabrication and installation to include, copper/fiber, patch panels, MDF’s, CAT 6, RJ-11, RJ-45 terminations, and perform necessary fiber optic, media converters, copper/fiber installation/repair/troubleshooting procedures.Understands and can install cabling and equipment in accordance with DoD TEMPEST standards, Army guide 3.15 General Cable Specifications, NSTISSI protective distribution system (PDS) installation guideline, I3A Standard as well as other regulations.
MAJOR JOB ACTIVITIES:
Performs system analysis in support of the telecommunication system; identify and assess user requirements.
Operate, maintain and install communications system, including outside plant (OSP) and inside plant (ISP).
Utilize a variety of test equipment to isolate, identify, and analyze equipment; troubleshoot issues and take appropriate action to resolve the problem.
Must be able to respond to emergency service-affecting situations for restoration of communication systems.
Receives user initiated work orders through the Maximo system.
Performs preventive and routine maintenance.
Read and effectively communicate flow charts, equipment manuals and technical documentation.
Perform other duties assigned or as required.
MATERIAL & EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED:
Must have hands-on experience for: fusion splicer, butt set telephone equipment, Krone fiber optic cable, copper cable, and power tools, OTDR and manholes system.
Work is conducted in a work center administrative environment and outside with a potential exposure to extreme temperatures. Employee use of personal protective equipment (PPE) in certain areas is required. Such PPE includes but is not limited to head, foot, hand, torso, respiratory, vision and hearing protective devices. Normal work week is 48 hours, but may be required to work overtime.
Must be physically capable of lifting 75 pounds a vertical distance of four feet and carrying this weight a horizontal distance of 25 feet.Will be required to lift, climb, extended sitting or standing, or other physical efforts that are normally required. In addition, visual acuity, hearing and speaking requirements are required.Qualifications
Education/Certifications : One year related experience may be substituted forone year of education, if degree is required.
Collegedegree or Equivalent
Building Industry Consulting ServicesInternational - (BICSI) certification or equivalent.
Fiber Certification preferred
Must be a U.S. Citizen.
Must possess a valid Secret Clearance.
Customer Service Training.
Approximately3-5 years work experience in the telecommunication field, installing, trouble shooting,repair, splicing, and terminating and site surveys.
Knowledgeablein the use of power tools and test equipment.
Knowledgeablein reading drawing and understanding the communication installation process.
Knowledgeableto act on unique or recurring customer problems.
Capable of effectively communicating technicalinformation in English, both written and verbal.
Must be capableof using a variety of test equipment to isolate, identify, and analyzeequipment; troubleshoot issues and take appropriate action to resolve theproblem.
Must have asolid working knowledge of the standard network physical layer components.
