Description

Incumbent serves as Transport Special Deputy for Tippecanoe County Sheriff/Jail Department, responsible for transporting inmates to/from the jail facility.
DUTIES- Transports inmates and juvenile detainees to/from various locations, including other states, courts, medical appointments, Department of Corrections (DOC), funerals, other appointments as directed by courts, and other detention facilities. Periodically transports individuals to mental health or other care facilities as ordered by court. Communicates with other law enforcement agencies, courts and related departments to coordinate transport/extradition activity.
- Maintains courtroom security at courthouse and jail courtroom, while in session, including searching suspects/arrestees and facilities, seizing weapons and/or contraband. Assists Court Jail Deputies with daily operations as needed. Assists Patrol Deputies and Court Special Deputies with security during special events.
- Detains subjects by court order or as needed, including maintaining custody of detainees in holding area in absence of Deputy. Escorts detainees to and from courtroom.
- Serves various legal documents as assigned, such as summonses, court orders to appear, and notices of hearings. Delivers returned documents to appropriate individuals/departments as required.
- Maintains various records on logs and/or computer and prepares and submits required reports according to department deadlines.
- Ensures assigned department vehicles receive routine monthly maintenance and other repairs as needed.
- Periodically performs other duties of Jail Special Deputies/Jail Special Deputy Supervisors, including, but not limited to, maintaining accurate accounting of all inmates, performing booking and bonding procedures of individuals being detained, escorting inmates to/from activities in the jail facility, issuing/monitoring prescribed medications according to physician's orders, and ensuring inmates receive proper medical attention as needed. Periodically administers random drug tests as required.
- Assists medical department with picking up medications and supplies.
- Periodically attends meetings and training sessions as required.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Job Requirements and Difficulty of Work
- High school diploma or HSE.
- Ability to obtain required certifications.
- Possession of and ability to maintain Handgun Course of Fire, as required by Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board.
- Ability to meet all department hiring and retention requirements, including not posing a direct threat to the health and safety of other individuals in the workplace.
- Working knowledge of and ability to follow and make practical application of customary practices, procedures, rules, regulations, and personnel policies of the department.
- Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling and punctuation, and ability to prepare required forms and reports within department deadlines.
- Working knowledge of and ability to properly use all assigned department uniforms and/or equipment, including computer, printer, typewriter, calculator, breathalyzer, camera, fingerprint equipment, intercom system, radio, telephone, surveillance/monitoring and video cameras, handgun, tear gas, handcuffs, leg irons, pepper spray, restraints, and electric locking devices.
- Ability to obey all written and oral orders/directives from department superiors.
- Ability to appropriately receive, secure and account for articles received in evidence, personal belongings of inmates, and monies.
