PSA – Supply & Maintenance Division NOTICE OF JOP OPENING DEPARTMENT: FIRE

HOURS:

PART-TIME POSITION; 24 HOURS/WEEK JOB DESCRIPTION

This employee is responsible for a variety of maintenance tasks as to assure the efficiency and economical operation of equipment and building fixtures. The person in this position performs mechanical work in the maintenance of fire department equipment/tools and minor repairs to apparatus and small engines. Other duties include servicing and maintaining working condition of all fire hydrants inside and outside city limits.

Performance of work requires mechanical aptitude, manual dexterity and the ability to analyze problems. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Fire Chief. No supervision over others is exercised.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Assists in repairing firefighting equipment and tools such as self-contained breathing apparatus, fire extinguishers, auxiliary and portable generators, power tools and miscellaneous firefighting appliance and valve controls
    • Disassembles operating parts
    • Replaced damaged or worn parts, reassembles and tests for compliance
  • Repairs or assists with repairing station fixtures
    • Makes minor repairs on washing machines, dryers, overhead doors, plumbing, stoves, refrigerators and furniture for all departmental facilities
    • Makes building repairs including performing some carpentry work and painting
  • Assists in annual testing and maintenance of fire hydrants
    • Greases working integral parts
    • Performs flow testing on all hydrants
    • Records all test information and maintains records for all hydrant test information
  • Performs other related work as required
    • Fills SCBA cylinders and assures quality of air in compressor
    • Performs scheduled preventative maintenance to miscellaneous tools and equipment
    • Assists with daily supply distribution and records management

      Subject to call-in 24 hours a day
QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Possess a valid driver’s license, Georgia class E/F
  • Background in mechanics
  • At least 18 years of age
DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
  • Courses in motor mechanics and appliance repair from a trade school
  • Considerable experience in maintenance and repairs of machinery and equipment
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of mechanical operating parts and functions
  • Knowledge of carpentry and electrical repairs
  • Knowledge of city streets, county roads and the water distribution system
  • Some knowledge of small gasoline engines
  • Skill in repairing mechanical malfunctions including disassembly and reassembly of working parts
  • Skill in using power tools
  • Skill in using testing equipment
  • Skill in human and public relations
  • Skill in operating equipment
  • Skill in repairing household appliances
  • Ability to work effectively with other employees
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions
  • Ability to read maps
  • Ability to paint
  • Ability to keep accurate, well-organized records
  • Ability to solve simple mathematical problems
  • Ability to lift objects weighing 25-50 pounds
WORK ENVIRONMENT

The employee will be exposed to the following conditions in the work environment: hot or cold indoor work environment; dirt, dust, grease, machinery and its moving parts; outdoor weather conditions; risk of electrical shock; and vibration. Bending, stooping and lifting will be required. Protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, and other protective equipment or clothing may often be required. The noise level in this work environment is usually moderate.
