Position Overview:

The Health & Safety Specialist is a key contributor to the safe and compliant operation of chemical manufacturing and industrial service sites. This role is responsible for implementing, sustaining, and continuously improving site-level health, safety, environmental, and process safety programs in alignment with OSHA PSM requirements, EPA regulations, and Ecovyst corporate standards.

What you will be doing:

Process Safety Management (PSM) & Operational Safety

  • Support all 14 elements of OSHA PSM (29 CFR ) across site operations, including PHAs, operating procedures, mechanical integrity, pre-startup safety reviews (PSSRs), and incident investigation.
  • Participate in Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs), HAZOPs, and What-If reviews for new and existing chemical processes involving sulfuric acid and other high-hazard materials.
  • Support the Management of Change (MOC) process to ensure all operational, equipment, and procedural changes are assessed and approved before implementation.
  • Perform routine field safety observations, JHA/JSA reviews, and risk assessments across production, maintenance, and loading/unloading operations.
  • Collaborate with engineering and operations teams on safe design, commissioning, and startup of modified or new process equipment.

Hazardous Chemical Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure safe handling, storage, transfer, and transportation of hazardous chemicals — including corrosives, reactive, and toxics — in accordance with OSHA Haz Com (29 CFR ) and DOT.
  • Maintain accurate Safety Data Sheets (SDS), chemical inventories, and threshold quantity (TQ) tracking for PSM and RMP-covered processes.

Incident Prevention, Investigation & Corrective Actions

  • Lead or support thorough investigations of safety incidents, near misses, process safety events, and chemical releases using structured root cause analysis (RCA) methodologies such as Think Reliability, 5-Why, or Bow-Tie analysis.
  • Develop, assign, track, and verify the effectiveness of corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs) arising from incidents, audits, and inspections.
  • Maintain accurate OSHA recordkeeping (OSHA 300, 300A, 301 logs) and manage regulatory reporting obligations to OSHA, EPA, and applicable state agencies.
  • Lead or support regulatory inspections and internal/external compliance audits; prepare audit-ready documentation and gap closure plans.
  • Develop and maintain site emergency response plans (ERPs), including chemical spill and release procedures, and coordinate regular drills and tabletop exercises.

Safety Training & Employee Engagement

  • Design and deliver practical, operations-focused safety training covering topics such as LOTO, confined space entry, hot work, electrical safety, chemical exposure prevention, contractor safety, and emergency response.
  • Maintain training records and ensure compliance with all mandatory regulatory and site-specific training requirements for hourly, salaried, and contractor personnel.
  • Act as a visible, credible, and approachable safety leader on the plant floor — building trust with frontline workers and reinforcing safe behaviors through coaching, recognition, and accountability.
  • Partner with supervisors, team leads, and operators to embed safety into standard operating procedures (SOPs), toolbox talks, and shift handover processes.
  • Lead or participate in safety committees, safety walks, and employee engagement programs to support a proactive, zero-harm safety culture.
