What You Will Do
Provide leadership in the Computational Intelligence & Modeling Group (A-1) to facilitate the application of trusted, cutting‑edge modeling, simulation, and data‑driven intelligence capabilities backed by rigorous engineering and validation to enable rapid, evidence‑based decision‑making for critical national and global security challenges. A-1 is the essential connection between research frontiers and mission success, where innovative research and development (R&D) transforms information on global threats into knowledge to keep decision makers ahead of the curve.
Agility and adaptability are highly prized and emphasized; because the global threat landscape constantly evolves, so too does A-1’s R&D portfolio. Some examples of A-1’s current stakeholders include the U.S. Department of Energy, National Nuclear Security Administration, Department of War, Department of Homeland Security, Intelligence Community, Defense Threat Reduction Agency, and many others. To achieve this, A-1 has a diverse team of subject matter experts, from mathematicians and economists to engineers and physicists, to computer and data scientists.
As a Deputy Group Leader (DGL), you will be an integral member of the highly collaborative Analytics, Intelligence, and Technology (A) Division Leadership Team. A-1’s DGL provides leadership and technical and operational oversight for programmatic execution by Group staff, facilitating the success of individuals and teams in A-1, and works closely with the leadership team in the development and execution of strategy to ensure A-1’s long‑term success.
The DGL will enable the staff to foster and cultivate a culture of innovation and continuous learning and will play a key role in developing, mentoring, and sustaining the workforce to position the Group for success in the present and future.
The DGL will be expected to partner with the Group Leader to:
- Provide oversight, support, and coordination of work by ensuring safety and security of the workforce.
- Increase the impact of A-1 by leading and/or partnering to advance the development and broad utilisation of complex research solutions across the Division and Laboratory.
- Enhance the competitive position of Group capabilities, including by helping shape A-1’s evolving short‑ and long‑term strategies.
- Identify, manage, and mitigate technical and organisational risk and enable timely/accurate delivery of high‑quality technical products.
- Work with the A Division Leadership Team, Laboratory program offices, and key stakeholders to develop, plan, and execute innovative projects and programmes to enable/build collaborations.
- Lead and mentor staff and take the initiative in strategic workforce development, succession planning, recruiting, retention, ethical and respectful work environment, and diversity of employees.
- Assist in performance and salary management of staff, strategic workforce planning, providing growth and development opportunities, and recognising individual and team accomplishments.
- Identify facility needs and technology investments required to promote operational and technological sustainment for the Group.
- Assist in managing A-1's internal budgets supporting research, development, and Group operations.
- Knowledge of and demonstrated experience in one or more of A-1’s core R&D capability areas: statistical methods for advanced data science, artificial intelligence, large language models, machine learning, network/graph analysis, numerical optimisation, stochastic modelling, uncertainty quantification, computational fluid dynamics, partial differential equations, multi‑modal data fusion, software engineering, and systems administration.
- Knowledge of and demonstrated experience in one or more of A-1’s core mission areas: multi‑modal intelligence and predictive analytics; critical infrastructure security and reliability; complex system vulnerability analysis including critical infrastructure, earth systems and human systems; plume dispersion modelling; wildfire modelling; decision support for emergency response; modelling for strategic deterrence.
