POSITION SUMMARY

The individual in this position assists teachers with curriculum planning, supervision of students, and teaching children in a classroom setting; assists in presenting and reinforcing learning concepts.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

* Provides support to teachers to ensure a safe and stimulating educational environment

* Assists teachers in planning and preparation for daily activities, aids instructional efforts of the teacher.

* Assists the teacher in preparing lesson outlines, plans, and curricula in assigned areas

* Plans, prepares, and develops various teaching aids for use in the classroom, including activity sheets, drawings, and similar handouts

* Presents subject matter to students, under the guidance of a teacher, utilizing a variety of methods including stories, discussions, and role playing

* Assists students, individually or in groups, with lesson assignments to present or reinforce learning concepts

* Perform a variety of clerical duties in support of classroom activities, such as preparing, typing, copying and filing instructional materials

* Operate and care for instructional equipment and materials

* Observe and control behavior of students in the classroom according to approved procedures

* Participate in professional growth activities

* Follow the communicated policies and procedures of the school district

* Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Education:

* Associate degree from an accredited institution in general education, sociology, or related field, Required

* Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution preferred

Experience

* Minimum 1 year of experience in a school setting or related field - Required

* Minimum 2 years of experience working in an educational setting - Preferred

* Successful experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified - Preferred

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

* Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing

* Ability to understand and follow safety procedures

* Ability to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures

* Ability to provide activities for students that encourage healthy growth

* Child supervision skills

* Ability to provide a supportive and caring environment for students

* Skill in preparing instructional aids and plans

CERTIFICATIONS

Must hold or be eligible for a Georgia Paraprofessional Certificate

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORKING CONDITIONS

Working Conditions:

* Normal classroom environment

* Understanding of detention operations

Physical Demands:

* Routine physical activities in the classroom / school environment

* Light lifting of 30 pounds or less
