Overview
Exact Sciences is looking for an Equipment / Automation Service Engineer II to install, calibrate, maintain, and repair laboratory equipment, ensuring quality and regulatory compliance while supporting customers and the service team.
ResponsibilitiesInstall and commission advanced laboratory instruments, ensuring all qualifications are completed per service policies.
Lead structured root cause investigations for equipment failures and implement corrective actions.
Perform routine preventive maintenance and calibrations in accordance with service policies.
Complete accurate service records, ensuring documentation meets Good Documentation Practices (GDP) and complies with OSHA, FDA, ISO, and CLIA requirements.
Write and review Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for equipment service, maintenance, and calibration.
Continuously develop expertise in servicing complex laboratory equipment and mentor Level 1 technicians on troubleshooting and best practices.
Collaborate with cross‑functional teams (R&D, Manufacturing, Lab Operations) to support equipment changes, upgrades, and customer‑facing discussions.
Provide guidance and coaching to junior staff, ensuring workflow quality and proper documentation.
Coordinate day‑to‑day workflow, track service activities, and manage schedules to prioritize urgent customer requirements.
Adapt to new information or unexpected situations, working independently or as part of a team.
Manage multiple tasks and deadlines while maintaining quality and attention to detail.
For Automation Service Engineer responsibilities: lead troubleshooting of complex automation issues, coordinate with vendors, support root cause investigations, plan system upgrades, develop maintenance plans, and create service documentation.
For Equipment Service Engineer responsibilities: serve as final escalation point for critical equipment issues, oversee RCA quality, validate new equipment deployments, lead service process improvements, author SOPs, conduct audits, and report service metrics.
Minimum:
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Technology, Electronics or related field, or equivalent experience; 3+ years in a service program; 2+ years supporting a service program; 2+ years mentoring junior staff.Experience interpreting mechanical parts and assembly drawings, electrical circuits and diagrams, and using measurement tools such as multimeters and analyzers.
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and use of mobile devices/tablets.
Demonstrated ability to perform engineering tasks under pressure, exercise independent judgment, and solve problems methodically.
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, and ability to document service activities accurately and timely.
Ability to lift up to 40 pounds, work standing 60‑75%, seated 25‑40%, and use a headset phone, and to perform typing for ~70% of the day.
Ability to travel 10‑20% of the time to Exact Sciences locations, including occasional overnight/weekend travel.
4+ years of experience with Quality Systems, documentation requirements, and regulatory compliance (OSHA, FDA, CLIA, ISO, CAP).
4+ years operating laboratory equipment (centrifuges, liquid handling robots, shakers) and performing hands‑on technical troubleshooting.
Experience with Next‑Generation Sequencing (NGS) and Digital Pathology Imaging, and maintaining complex histology equipment.
Experience updating software for laboratory equipment, working in a cGMP environment, and developing continuous database management procedures.
Experience with validation processes, equipment qualification, and control systems for robotics and custom automation.
Strong knowledge of clinical laboratory service operations and ability to contribute to automation design and integration.
Salary Range: $76,000.00 – $ (US – WI – Madison, full‑time). Bonus eligible.
