General Definition of Work:
Provides effective teaching and training for students, as assigned (in general instruction, in a specialized subject area or in a group of subject areas); evaluates and motivates student progress; maintains a safe and appropriate learning environment; supervises paraprofessionals, if applicable; performs all responsibilities and essential functions in a professional manner, requiring only minimal general supervision.

," "Education and Experience," and "Physical Conditions" are considered essential functions required for this position.
Performance expectations:
The minimum performance expectations include, but are not limited to, the following actions:
- Maintains licensure;
- Meets and instructs students in the locations and at the times designated;
- Attends work as assigned, promptly and reliably;
- Supervises students and maintains physical surroundings in a manner that ensures a safe, orderly and positive environment conducive to effective learning;
- Plans and prepares, in accordance with curriculum guidelines and requirements of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the Smyth County School Board, for classes and other duties assigned and provides evidence of such planning and preparation upon request of the immediate supervisor;
- Encourages and motivates students to set, achieve and maintain high standards of academic success and classroom behavior;
- Establishes and maintains positive appropriate rapport with students and serves as a positive and professional role model;
- Uses instructional and planning time effectively;
- Provides an effective program of instruction;
- Remains abreast of and implements current instructional practices, including determining and implementing differentiation techniques based on the diverse needs and plans of individual students, groups and programs;
- Maintains current knowledge of child growth and development and guides classroom strategies accordingly;
- Maintains current knowledge of effective educational materials, technology and resources, and maximizes the use of such in accordance with the adopted curriculum and consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided;
- Demonstrates mastery of content area, curriculum and current instructional practices;
- Delivers instruction using a variety of strategies and resources;
- Adapts instructional programming and plans to account for scheduling and for individual student needs and progress;
- Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities;
- Maintains, follows and upholds school and county policies and procedures;
- Maintains records and confidentiality as required by law, system policy, and administrative regulations;
- Assists in upholding and enforcing school rules and administrative regulations;
- Administers standardized tests in accordance with established procedures;
- Evaluates student progress using a variety of assessment techniques and provides timely and effective evaluative feedback to students;
- Is reasonably available to students and parents for education-related purposes;
- Attends and participates in faculty and department meetings, and professional development conferences, workshops and programs;
- Cooperates with other members of the staff in planning instructional goals, objectives, and methods;
- Assists in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials;
- Works to establish and maintain open and effective lines of communication with students, parents, and colleagues concerning both the academic and behavioral progress of all students;
- Establishes and maintains collaborative and cooperative professional relations with others;
- Performs related duties as assigned by the administration in accordance with the school/system policies and practices.
Skills and Abilities
:
Mastery of all subjects and/or all curricula taught; thorough knowledge of principles and methodologies for effective instruction; knowledge of and ability to abide by relevant state Standards of Learning, all School Board policies and procedures, and all building rules; ability to read, analyze and interpret written word, graphs, and numerical data; ability to engage in and utilize effective and professional verbal, nonverbal and written communication;
ability to establish and maintain collegial and professional working relationships with supervisors, colleagues, students, and parents.
Education and Experience:
Candidates must hold or be eligible for a Virginia teaching certificate with endorsement in applicable subject area.
