Public Safety Officer ; Per Diem

This position performs all duties related to the day‑to‑day protection and security of hospital assets, information, and the safety of all persons on hospital property. The incumbent conducts proactive patrols, serves as the first responder to crises, and documents incidents per department policy.

Hours: Per Diem; 1st, 2nd, and 3rd shifts required. Weekend and holiday shifts required.

Location: Melrose Wakefield Hospital.

• Conduct internal and external patrols of all facilities and grounds.
• Respond to and report routine and emergency calls for service, building alarms, and restrain violent patients or visitors.
• Monitor assigned areas for suspicious activity, screen vendors and visitors, and provide escorts to patients, visitors, and staff in accordance with procedures.
• Identify security vulnerabilities, safety hazards and policy violations; take immediate corrective action and collaborate with other departments to mitigate or resolve issues.
• Handle patient crisis interventions, using least invasive measures to achieve the safest outcomes for all parties.
• Ensure employees and others possess visible hospital identification badges; engage those without badges courteously.
• Grant access to authorized staff with valid badges; restrict those without authorized business.
• Maintain composure under stress; apply trained verbal and nonverbal de‑escalation strategies.
• Perform other duties assigned by department leadership.

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid state‑issued driver’s license.

• Proficient in communicating, reading, and writing in English.
• Basic computer skills.
• Ability to multitask and meet deadlines.
• Ability to assess potentially dangerous situations quickly, make sound decisions, and take appropriate action.
• Physical ability to perform the duties described above.

Pay Range: $21.53 – $26.91 per hour.
