Position Overview

Gulliver Prep Upper School College Counselors are passionate, student-centered educators committed to delivering dynamic, engaging, and rigorous academic experiences. The College Counselor will work closely with upper school students, guiding them through the college exploration and application process, including advising on course selection, standardized testing, and creating a balanced college list. The role involves assisting with application essays, and liaising with college admissions representatives.

The counselor will also collaborate with families, faculty, and staff to ensure students are well-prepared to achieve their academic and career objectives.

Job Responsibilities
  • Proactively create and develop positive relationships with all school community members (students, families, teachers, administrators, and staff).
  • Meet with parents and guardians of students in assigned caseload (approximately 30 students per grade, 10-12) to discuss student progress and to determine priorities for the students and their academic needs and goals.
  • Confer with faculty, other college counselors, mental health counselors, and administrators to discuss assigned students’ needs and progress.
  • Guide students in grades 11 and 12 through all aspects of the college application process, including college list development, athletic recruitment advisement, creation and completion of college applications, essay development and refinement, and submission of applications.
  • Responsible for writing a detailed and persuasive college counselor’s recommendation letter in support of each Grade 12 student in their caseload.
  • Attend weekly department meetings, assist in developing pre-college and college advising programming, teach college advising workshops and seminars, and participate in department programming events during and outside of regular school hours. Must demonstrate flexibility to attend and support evening and weekend events for families, as well as occasional overnight college tour programs.
  • Collaborate with the college counseling team to maintain and update handbooks, handouts, digital newsletters, and the annually updated Upper School Profile.
  • As assigned by the Director of School and College Counseling, professionally represent Gulliver Prep at relevant state and national college counseling conferences and workshops, as well as visit colleges and universities, to remain current on college admission trends impacting Gulliver Prep’s college counseling program and to deepen and expand knowledge of school options.
  • Establish positive working relationships with college admission offices, ensuring they are familiar with Gulliver Preparatory School, specifically, and to advocate on behalf of students to facilitate the admissions process.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Upper School Director of School and College Counseling and the Upper School Principal.
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in the subject area or a related field (Master’s preferred).
  • Expertise in College Counseling, including knowledge of admissions processes and trends.
  • Skills in College Applications and familiarity navigating application platforms such as Common App, Maia Learning, and UCAS.
  • Experience in Student Counseling and working with high school students.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to collaborate with students, families, and faculty.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced educational environment with diverse students and families.
  • Familiarity with college readiness tools and resources is a plus.
