The Nurse Manager provides leadership, clinical practice and staff development for one nursing unit, and is responsible for assessing, planning, coordinating, implementing and evaluating nursing practice at the unit level. The Nurse Manager is accountable to ensure high quality, safe and appropriate nursing care, competency of clinical and support staff, and appropriate resource and service management related to patient care. The Nurse Manager must also ensure services and care are provided abiding by the policies and procedures of the organization, demonstrate fiscal responsibility and accountability.
The Nurse Manager is responsible and accountable for implementing executive strategies into frontline reality by effectively and efficiently managing and leading in area(s) of responsibility for the strategic, financial and human resource plans, performance improvement initiatives, appropriate clinical practice knowledge and technology.
- Strategic Vision – The Nurse Manager works to define and implement nursing’s strategic plan, and ensures the area of responsibility is fully integrated into the overall strategic goals and objectives. Understands and shares the strategic plan of the organization including roles, timelines, milestones and resource utilization.
- People Leadership – The Nurse Manager improves employee engagement through collaboration, routinely reviews reports from Human Resources, recognizes team members for performance, supports retention through mentoring, develops and monitors performance expectations, promotes a results‑oriented environment, and supports a Just Culture model for reporting unsafe practices.
- Service Excellence – The Nurse Manager is responsible for continuous improvement of quality and performance metrics including core measures, hospital acquired infections, safety initiatives and the patient experience, evidenced by daily patient rounding and use of the iRounding tool. Monitors and evaluates service indicators, facilitates education related to service excellence, and role‑models CARE values (Compassion, Accountability, Respect, Expertise).
- Organizational Impact – The Nurse Manager assumes responsibility for continuous growth, employee development and daily unit operations, including strategic succession planning. Serves as a change agent, forms unit objectives, maintains positive relationships with all providers, and advocates a shared governance model.
- Continuous Improvement – The Nurse Manager ensures the performance improvement program is interdisciplinary and aligned with the organization’s objectives, cultivates a culture of innovation, partners with other disciplines to drive positive change, attends leadership development classes, and facilitates staff participation in shared governance and decision making.
- Operational Excellence – The Nurse Manager performs cost‑benefit analysis, monitors unit finances and productivity, justifies monthly variances, maintains compliance with regulatory requirements and JHS policies, interprets trends in healthcare administration, designs flexible staffing models, ensures a safe professional environment, follows unit‑specific policies, and performs all related job duties.
Generally requires 5 to 7 years of related experience. Management experience is strongly preferred.
EducationBachelor’s degree in Nursing is required. Employees hired into this position before January 2006 are grandfathered in to the BSN requirement.
