DescriptionWorks on utility crews installing and repairing mains, service lines, fire hydrants, meters, valves and other appurtenances. Performs any combination of duties on construction projects usually working in utility capacity, by transferring from one task to another where demands require worker with varied experience and ability, requiring little or no independent judgment.
Essential FunctionsTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily, with or without reasonable accommodation, and meet the other requirements of this position.
- Taps water mains: installs, repairs, or removes steel or plastic service lines; installs industrial, commercial, or residential water meters.
- Ensures the materials and tools are available as needed, returns tools and equipment to their proper place; keeps tools and supplies in a clean and orderly manner on the job; keeps the work area in a clean and orderly condition. Performs physical labor work as required, including using shovel and bar to excavate, backfills holes and trenches; installs shoring, and bracing in holes and trenches as required;
mixes and shovels concrete into place; tampers and/or operates vibrator to ensure proper distribution of aggregate; replaces and/or install concrete around fire hydrants, manhole covers, gate pots, meter boxes, and related fixtures. - Uses common tools such as wrenches, hammers, pliers, screwdrivers, and special tools and equipment as tapping machine and sump pumps.
- Operates an asphalt saw, compressor, and pneumatic tools such as pavement breakers, spades, and tampers, to cut and remove pavement or concrete in preparation for pipeline installation and repair work; operates vibratory compactor, roller, and related equipment; performs blade changes, adjustments or minor maintenance on asphalt-concrete saws.
- Disinfects and flushes new distribution main, de-chlorinates distribution main and discharges and flushes the distribution system.
- Pressure tests and takes bacteria samples on constructed work.
- Performs other duties related to construction as instructed.
- Reports any problems to your manager.
- Assists construction / paving crew with various duties such as shoveling and raking and running wheelbarrow.
- Signals operators of construction equipment to facilitate alignment and movement of materials.
- Follows directions of manager as to daily tasks and expectations for each specific project or job site.
- May be called upon to run small power tools such as jack hammer.
- Dig, spread and level construction materials.
- Lifts, carries and holds materials, tools and supplies.
- Assists in the placement, moving and dismantling of signs, barricades, cones and other traffic control devices.

- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, grasp, reach with hands and arms;

- Willingness to work out-of-doors under varying climatic conditions and work overtime on an extended shift or off-hours as needed. Must possess physical characteristics to perform critical and important duties of the job, including the ability to lift and carry tools and equipment.
- Working knowledge of the identification, use and operation of common hand and power tools; the equipment, materials, and methods used in water distribution pipeline installation, repair and maintenance.
- Knowledge of safety regulations and procedures pertaining to the work, including proper trench shoring and barricading methods.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions; complete forms accurately and keep records; establish and maintain effective working relationships; work from plans, sketches and written instructions; work cooperatively with and train others if necessary. Must possess manual dexterity and be in good physical condition for heavy outdoor construction work.

Work EnvironmentWillingness to work 50+ hours a week, including out-of-doors under varying climatic conditions. Noise level is high. Employee may experience occasional pressure due to multiple tasks and deadlines.
