Position OverviewAn on-site research opportunity is available at the EPA Office of Air and Radiation (OAR) within the Integrated Health Assessment Branch (IHAB), located in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. This role supports EPA’s mission to protect human health and the environment by contributing to high-impact, policy-relevant research and scientific assessments.
Responsibilities- Apply systematic review methods to human air pollution exposure data, including literature search and screening, study evaluation, and synthesis of evidence.
- Prepare Integrated Science Assessments (ISAs), reviewing and analyzing exposure data for qualitative and quantitative assessments of exposure routes.
- Develop scientific approaches for IHAB’s assessment process and collaborate with EPA scientists to improve methodologies.
- Research cross-cutting scientific issues in EPA assessments, rule-makings, and policy development.
- Conduct independent human exposure science research projects, with potential to author peer-reviewed publications or conference presentations.
- Synthesize technical and policy information for presentation to EPA managers and stakeholder groups.
- Gain experience in quantitative or qualitative analyses of human exposure data to inform EPA scientific assessments.
- Understand how scientific evidence is used to develop EPA program priorities, rule-making, and decision-making processes.
- Observe and collaborate with staff across IHAB and other EPA offices, gaining knowledge of EPA’s science and policy assessment processes.
- Current pursuit or completion of a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree in a relevant field such as chemistry, environmental science, data science, engineering, or public health.
- Strong interest and coursework in human exposure science, ambient air pollution epidemiology, or environmental health.
- Experience in evaluating and synthesizing published literature.
- Quantitative data analysis skills (preferably R or Python) and experience with environmental or health datasets.
- Superior writing and communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
- Ability to work independently and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
- Background in epidemiology, environmental health, or environmental engineering with an understanding of environmental exposures.
Monthly stipend commensurate with educational level, ranging from $52,693 to $77,983 annually.
Employment DetailsAppointment starts as soon as possible, 2026. Initial term is one year with the possibility of renewal for an additional three to four years, subject to funding and EPA recommendation.
Full‑time position.
Eligibility: U.S. citizen only. Appointees must complete a successful background investigation by OPM. Proof of health insurance is required.
