Tl’azt’en Nation is seeking a dynamic individual to engage our community in positive health and wellness activities as our worker in Criminal Justice. The ideal candidate is motivated, a self-starter, strong planner, community minded, team oriented ready to step up and provide excellence in service to our community. In accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of the Nation, patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone, and as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Works collaboratively with the interprofessional team to provide crime prevention, justice circles, intervention and community Justice safety measures.
  • A client focused approach with special interest in criminal justice
  • Have well developed interpersonal, communication and presentation skills; tact and diplomacy; initiative and flexibility
  • An Enthusiastic and willing to learn attitude – Great organizational, multitasking and communication skills – Be able to problem solve and come up with creative solutions
  • A personable and professional attitude – Proficiency in Microsoft computer applications
  • Maintain effective ways to communicate with justice partners (Police, Crown Counsel, Courts, and Corrections) and related community agencies.
  • For Corrections, this means having a process of accepting referrals, providing monthly reports for each client, providing a closing summary, etc.
  • Deliver information workshops and cross-cultural training to justice partners and related community agencies and provide training to community members in their villages.
  • Encourage the revival of traditional justice practices.
  • Examples of this may be circle sentencing but traditional justice practices can be quite varied.
  • Develop a restorative justice or reparation focused sentencing advisory process for adult offenders.
  • This would be a way of informing the Court or Police of what the Tl’azt’en Nation can offer in terms of culturally appropriate sentencing options.
  • Develop individualized case/action plans for community members who are referred by community and justice partners.
  • Assist Corrections in the monitoring of adult offenders who are on bail, are sentenced, are being offered Alternative Measures, are on a Temporary Absence from a custody centre, or are on parole.
  • To maintain client records including the original referral form, documentation of all client interactions, document all interactions with other people associated with the client, a
  • case/action plan, and a final written report to the referring agency documenting completion and a recommendation for future participation in the Aboriginal Justice Program.
  • Have a strategy for dealing with client relapses and barriers in completing case/action plans
  • Develop and participate in other programming mutually agreed upon Aboriginal Justice Worker Program and the Corrections Branch.
  • For Corrections, this is the co-facilitation of core programming (Respectful Relationships and Substance Abuse Management)
  • Provide Quarterly statement of accounts on services provided by the Aboriginal Justice Program.
  • Self-evaluate the program and outline goals and objectives for the new fiscal year and to provide a reasonable expectation of client caseloads
  • Provide coverage in other areas of the CHS department as requested and other duties as directed.
  • Complete and maintain accurate up to date record of files and meet reporting requirements in a timely professional manner.
Qualifications:

As the ideal candidate, you will be at the forefront of the centre and the first line of contact for our clients in addition to providing quality client services in an efficient, timely manner while ensuring the administrative needs of Tl’azt’en Nation are being met. You will possess:

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Diploma or certificate in social services, criminal justice or a related discipline
  • Preferably a minimum 1-2 years of relevant experience
  • Ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner
  • Must complete a Criminal Record Check, Drivers Abstract and Vulnerable Person’s Sector Check
  • Must be willing to obtain – OFA III and CPR (or ability to successfully complete OFA III)
  • Ability to organize work and set priorities; ability to meet deadlines and work independently and ensuring confidentiality.
