Pacem School is hiring a Head of School to work collaboratively with an amazing team of teachers and students. We are looking for an experienced, energetic educator to lead our creative, intellectually-inspiring learning community.

Pacem School is an intellectually inspiring, joyful learning community in Montpelier, VT. We are a state‑approved, full‑time independent 6th ‑ 12th grade school, and, in addition, we offer coursework and extra‑curricular support to homeschoolers aged 10 ‑ 18. Our students are curious and passionate. We give them time and freedom to pursue their interests and help them develop the skills to delve deeply.

We support students to be the primary architects of their own education so they may pursue their individual intellectual and creative passions. Small academically challenging classes and a flexible stimulating curriculum foster intense engagement. Pacem’s inspired and exceptionally talented teachers celebrate curiosity and creativity and challenge all students to reach their fullest potential. Our students grow into caring, responsible, and confident life‑long learners who make a difference in their communities and have the skills and awareness needed to create a more cooperative, just, and sustainable world.

Job Summary

The Head of School’s primary responsibility is to work with the General Circle and Lead Teacher to lead and manage Pacem’s operations, assuming overall responsibility for staff, programs, administration, planning, finances, development, and implementation of the mission. The Head of School works closely with the Board, General Circle, and Faculty Circle to govern the school sociocratically and plan and implement strategies to fulfill Pacem’s mission.

The position reports to the board. The Head of School also teaches 2 classes in their subject area.

Salary: $50-75K, not currently offering benefits but could be discussed with the Board

Position to start about June 15, 2026

Responsibilities General Responsibilities
  • Maintain a clear vision to realize Pacem’s mission, and manage the school in accordance with its mission, vision, and bylaws
  • Work collaboratively with the General Circle, Board, and other circles to make decisions and policies, and foster collaboration, healthy communication, and Sociocratic decision‑making
  • Lead the faculty in community building and fostering an inclusive, positive, intellectually‑inspiring school climate and cultures
School Management
  • Ensure that all programs both curricular and extracurricular occur as expected
  • In collaboration with the Lead Teacher, hire, supervise, and evaluate faculty
  • Be responsible for regular communication with parents including orientation and ongoing communication
  • Chair General Circle and lead implementation of GC policies and operational decisions
  • Ensure that the school is in compliance with all state regulations including emergency procedures, etc.
  • Ensure that adequate supplies and resources are available to teachers and students.
  • Ensure that college guidance occurs, transcripts are maintained and, and distributed as necessary
Development
  • Work with the Board to plan and carry out fund‑raising programs such as the annual appeal, capital campaigns, silent auction, giving Tuesday, and other events
  • Supervise Pacem’s donor‑relations including identifying, cultivating, thanking, and communicating with past and prospective donors.
  • Oversee relations with alumni
  • Create and send annual report
Community Outreach and Marketing
  • Represent the school in the wider community including connecting with media
  • Communicate and meet with prospective parents and students, arrange and facilitate visits, manage admissions paperwork, and maintain records of prospective students.
  • Supervise admissions decision‑making, including administration of financial aid program
  • Ensure that other marketing activities happen as necessary
Business Management
  • Work with the Board Treasurer to create an annual budget and manage school funds transparently. Present financial updates to the board including income, expenses, and cash flow
