Summary

The ED/SSU Tech primarily provides direct patient care, demonstrating competent clinical practice with a variety of patients. Working as part of a team focused on patient-centered, timely care, the Tech offers compassionate, nonjudgmental care to emergency department patients, observation patients, and outpatients under the direction of physicians and RNs. The role includes performing duties and procedures within scope of practice such as specimen collection, vital signs, EKGs, stocking of supplies, cleaning, patient transportation, clerical responsibilities, lab collection, respiratory treatments, and other assigned duties.

The Tech assists nurses, physicians, and team members to deliver relationship-based care while handling sophisticated equipment and navigating a friendly yet frequently stressful environment.

Responsibilities

(40%) The Tech maintains a friendly, customer‑oriented attitude at all times, treating all individuals encountered—patients, families, visitors, staff, community members, and others—with non‑judgmental kindness, compassion, respect, and relationship-based care.

(30%) Following direction from the RN, the Tech provides services as prescribed by the physician’s plan of care, following accepted evidence‑based standards. Responsibilities include direct patient care, minor treatments, answering call lights, assisting with transfers, responding to alarms, and other assigned duties.

(20%) The Tech reports on the effectiveness of treatment plans to the RN, offers suggestions, and participates in updating or revising the plan in collaboration with team members, using current information to improve patient care.

(10%) The Tech remains compliant with all local, state, and federal regulations, maintains knowledge of My Michigan Health and ED/SSU specific policies and procedures, and upholds professional standards.

Other Duties and Responsibilities Safety
  • Demonstrates awareness of specific safety concerns in the department.
  • Complies with My Michigan Health safety guidelines.
  • Maintains department equipment as necessary.
  • Identifies and communicates concerns regarding unsafe conditions or equipment promptly.
  • Participates in medical‑center safety drills.
  • Utilizes appropriate lift equipment routinely.
Education
  • Attends education days.
  • Seeks opportunities for self‑education and enrichment while sharing information with co‑workers.
Patient Care
  • Collects vital signs and weight.
  • Participates in direct patient care; moves, lifts, and transports patients as required.
Performs EKG
  • Performs intravenous access as ordered and within scope, promptly and accurately.
  • Performs other clinical and technical aspects of care per established policies.
  • Displays a pleasant, friendly, cooperative manner to the public.
  • Maintains a clean, tidy exam room, including inventory of room supplies.
  • Maintains orderly patient flow.
Cleans Equipment
  • Familiar with cardiac monitors; applies leads and operates equipment.
  • Assists with emergency equipment and procedures under RN or physician supervision.
Completes Documentation
  • Follows sterile technique during setup and throughout procedures; assists physicians with all types of procedures.
Quality
  • Supports the mission, goals, policies, and standards of the ED/SSU.
  • Assists the RN to ensure patient care outcomes and safety needs are met.
  • Communicates identified problems to appropriate personnel and implements actions to meet patient needs.
  • Assists the unit in maintaining the area per Joint Commission standards.
  • Participates in quality improvement activities in the department.
Secretary
  • All clerical duties.
  • Answers telephone.
Ordering and Stocking
  • Assists with ordering as indicated.
  • Orders from purchasing weekly for medical supplies, lab supplies, and office supplies.
  • Special invoices for supplies not available in storeroom.
  • Places orders with pharmacy.
  • Stocks exam room with supplies and refills hand cleaner bottles.
Infection Prevention and Control Practices
  • Possesses an understanding of infection prevention and control measures to prevent disease spread.
  • Maintains standards of infection prevention and control policies.
  • Implements and maintains isolation techniques per policy.
