Job Description

Position Purpose

The Needham Public Schools is seeking a Special Education Teacher to be the lead teacher in our specialized program (Intensive Learning Center) to support students with developmental and intellectual disabilities. This position begins in August 2026. Under the general supervision of the Special Education Coordinator and School Principal, the teacher will maximize the learning experience of students with special needs in academics, interpersonal skills, and daily living activities by implementing district-approved curriculum, documenting teaching and student progress, addressing students’ specific needs, and providing a safe, optimal learning environment.

Essential

Functions
  • Conduct assessments, testing, and diagnostic examinations of students for identifying learning challenges and opportunities, and recommending courses of action or corrective procedures.
  • Participate in team meetings and assist in developing Individual Education Programs (IEPs) for students.
  • Develop DTT/ABA programs, data tracking, and program books.
  • Assist students and teaching staff in implementing students’ IEPs and behavior management plans.
  • Coordinate with administrators, other teaching staff, and related service providers to ascertain individual students’ abilities and needs.
  • Serve as a liaison between home and school, guiding students toward increased personal growth, self‑understanding, and behavioral management.
  • Continue to acquire professional knowledge and stay current with developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops, professional meetings, or conducting research.
  • Organize and maintain a system for accurate record‑keeping and provide student information and data for progress reports.
  • Encourage parental involvement and ensure effective communication with students and parents.
  • Assist in the orientation of new instructional assistants, providing training and guidance as necessary.
  • Priority will be given to applicants with Wilson or Orton‑Gillingham training, behavioral and/or emotional intervention training, or experience.
  • Provide direct instruction across the curriculum, including accommodations and modifications per varied student needs.

  • Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.
Skills, Knowledge, & Abilities
  • Knowledge of Special Education principles, theories, testing, methods, and proven techniques for maximizing the educational experience of students with special needs.
  • Knowledge of differentiated instruction based on student learning styles.
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and formulation of action plans.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state education laws.
  • Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ability to engage in self‑evaluation for performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.
Qualifications

Certification/License:

  • Massachusetts State Certification as an elementary Special Education Teacher – moderate / severe special needs.
  • BCBA credentials preferred.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s from an accredited college or university in an education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
  • Master’s Degree in Special Education.

Experience:

  • Successful prior lead teacher experience required.
  • Experience developing and modifying program books.
