The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) recognizes its Engineers as a highly valued resource and plays a critical role in protecting public health and the environment. For that reason, we are offering monetary recruitment incentives to new DNREC Engineers in accordance with our Recruitment Program Policy and Procedures.

Sign‑On Bonus

The program provides recruitment incentives based on position classification:

  • $4,000 Engineer I
  • $5,000 Engineer II
  • $6,000 Engineer III
  • $7,000 Engineer IV

Incentives are paid in two installments: one after three months and the second after eighteen months of employment. New employees must commit to two consecutive years of employment with DNREC in the Engineer I‑IV series.

Telework and Alternative Work Schedules

This position is eligible for telework and alternative work schedules in accordance with the State of Delaware’s Alternative Work Arrangement Policy.

Upon satisfactory completion of department promotional standards and job requirements, employees may be promoted to the next level.

Essential Functions
  • Draft, develop, and modify engineering designs, plans, and specifications.
  • Review permit applications, blueprints, and/or designs prepared by others to ensure compliance with specifications and regulations.
  • Apply the principles and theories of science and mathematics to research and develop solutions to technical problems.
  • Plan and conduct field studies, surveys, research, and development projects, inspections, and investigations to collect data and ensure conformance to state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Test or evaluate materials, equipment, systems, and facilities.
  • Plan and coordinate engineering projects.
  • Review, analyze, and report on the status of projects and or regulatory conformance.
  • Develop cost estimates for project time and materials.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to technical staff.
Job Requirements for Engineer I
  • Possession of a Bachelor’s degree or higher (or an anticipated graduation date within 9 months) in Civil, Environmental, Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, or Industrial Engineering, or official notice of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES).

DNREC does not provide sponsorship for H‑1B visas. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States and possess a valid driver’s license (not suspended, revoked, or cancelled).
