Cornell Cooperative Extension of Wyoming County is hiring a part‑time Agriculture Assistant at its Warsaw, NY office. The position supports garden, county fair and office projects, providing hands‑on experience and essential soft‑skill development.
Responsibilities- Follow soil‑sampling procedures and shadow staff during site visits.
- Perform general garden and field tasks such as weeding, watering, planting, labeling, harvesting, and routine maintenance.
- Assist with community events and create small interactive demonstrations.
- Prepare workshop and educational materials, copy handouts, print flyers, and assist moving supplies.
- Maintain storage areas, keep a weekly journal, provide feedback, and develop an independent project with a final presentation.
- Submit accurate expense and mileage reports per policy.
- Assist in collecting data for reports, impact statements and stories for funders.
- Transport self and program materials as needed.
- Participate in professional development planning, training, and orientation.
- Support a safe work environment and follow safety policies.
- Perform general tasks in support of Extension programs, attend staff meetings, and follow laws and regulations.
- Recent high school graduate or in Grade 11/12 with a GPA of 2.5 or higher.
- Interest in agriculture, environmental science, biology or related fields.
- Ability to interact professionally with local farmers, professionals and the public.
- Basic math proficiency.
- Willingness to learn data collection and presentation techniques.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Basic Windows and Microsoft Office skills; internet use.
- Proficient in English speaking, reading and writing.
- Background check clearance.
- Flexible hours, evenings, weekends and seasonal work.
- Reliable transportation across Wyoming County.
- Ability to work in office and outdoor conditions, including extreme weather.
