Location: New York

Financial Counselor

The Part‑Time Financial Counselor will lead the Rockaway Village Financial Counseling Program at the Far Rockaway Opportunity Center, hosting monthly financial literacy workshops, conducting outreach, and providing one‑on‑one sessions to assist residents of affordable housing with severe debt.

This position requires occasional evenings and weekends, with regular hours Tuesday‑Thursday, 11 am‑4 pm, and is available for a one‑year period with a possible extension based on grant funds.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Work closely with management to develop and plan monthly financial workshops, both in‑person and virtually, focusing on budgeting, credit scores, debt reduction, and related topics.
  • Collaborate with financial institutions to leverage resources and facilitate workshops as needed.
  • Prepare and deliver one‑on‑one lessons for residents in debt, providing actionable strategies to reduce debt.
  • Conduct outreach with the Resident Ambassador by contacting residents with significant rent arrears.
  • Create tasks for residents to complete before one‑on‑one sessions.
  • Build and maintain strong, supportive relationships with residents.
  • Remain familiar with technology‑related banking tools and apps.
  • Use Salesforce to track residents’ progress and follow‑ups.
  • Work effectively with people of diverse cultures and backgrounds.
  • Maintain safe and healthy training environments in accordance with organizational standards.
  • Perform additional tasks as deemed necessary by the agency.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in finance, economics, or a business‑related field.
  • 1–3 years of experience providing financial counseling to low‑income communities, immigrants, and other underserved populations.
  • Bilingual in Spanish preferred.
Skills
  • Finance/Business knowledge.
  • Strong public speaking and presentation abilities.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent communication and patience with beginners.
  • Familiarity with technology‑related banking tools and apps.
  • Effective relationship building across cultures and backgrounds.
