The Staff Nurse utilizes the nursing process to meet a variety of health care needs with ambulatory care as a primary focus. This role involves working with a variety of health care professionals and security officers in a correctional environment. The position frequently functions guided by nursing protocols and may serve as a team leader as assigned.

Key responsibilities include demonstrating competency in assessment and identification of the physical health of adults (18 to 64 years), and geriatrics (65 and above), identifying inmate-centered goals, and implementing prescribed interventions and solutions for identified problems. The Staff Nurse provides direct and indirect nursing care to meet the physiological, psychosocial, and emotional needs of inmate-patients within the framework established by the correctional system.

The role requires effective communication skills, demonstrating respect, concern, and courtesy in all interpersonal relationships. The nurse must use current knowledge to promote a safe environment for providing health care to inmate-patients and maintain current professional skills for continued professional growth. Adherence to personnel policies is essential to enhance the operation of the health care unit.

The Staff Nurse is responsible for maintaining required annual licensure and credentialing requirements, continuing education, and professional development, and contributing to the professional growth of co-workers. The ability to function in a stressful environment and relate well to patients, security staff, and healthcare team members is crucial. There may be exposure to infections and contagious diseases, and entry and movement within the facility will be controlled by Correctional Officers.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing
Certifications/Licenses
  • LPN License to practice in the State of New Jersey
  • CPR Certification required
  • Valid Driver's License is required
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in a correctional setting preferred
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • As a first responder, must have the physical capacity to perform CPR for at least 10 minutes.
  • Physically able to lift and carry upstairs an emergency treatment bag weighing up to 45 pounds and assist in lifting and rotating patients who are unable to ambulate (up to 50 pounds).
  • Must possess own vehicle or alternative means of transportation from one site to another.
  • Must be approved by the client and adhere to all client requirements.
  • Employees will be subject to and must comply with all security regulations and procedures.
