Pay rate $19.941 per hour. Employees may be promoted to a Construction Technician II position at a rate of $22.938 per hour upon acquiring the necessary certifications and demonstration of skills.

Job Duties

Construction Technicians are responsible for field inspection of heavy highway construction projects. They perform materials testing on concrete, asphalt, soils, and other materials, verify contractors’ work, read and interpret plans, contracts, and specifications, record and maintain accurate documentation, use computers daily, perform survey tasks with rods, levels, tape measures, GPS, work as a team or independently, assist with snow removal, and may operate snowplows during winter weather events.

They perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements / Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Highway Construction Technician I:
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver’s license.
Highway Construction Technician II:
Must have experience performing activities related to construction work such as surveying, materials testing, or field inspections, or coursework/training in these areas. Must also be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in surveying, road construction, materials testing, record keeping, trigonometry, and geometry.
  • Possession of a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
  • Experience operating heavy equipment or snow removal equipment.
  • Computer experience including work processing, spreadsheets, Site Manager, GEOPAK, and Micro Station software.

Must possess or be able to obtain a Class A or B CDL within 90 days of hire through our in‑house CDL training program; cost to obtain the permit will be paid by the department. This position may require overnight travel. Regular and reliable attendance is required. To qualify for the Hwy Construction Technician II classification, applicants must possess or be able to obtain a Class A or B CDL within 90 days of hire through our in‑house CDL training program.

Costs to obtain the permit will be paid by the department. To be hired at the Highway Construction Technician II level, applicants must have passed the NDOT Math, Highway Plan Reading, and Bridge Plan reading courses or have an Associate’s degree in civil engineering technology, or a related field which may be substituted for completion of the NDOT courses.
