Primary Teaching Assistant – Flexible supply roles, day-to-day and short-term opportunities

These flexible opportunities are ideal for Primary Teaching Assistants who enjoy variety and want to make a positive impact across different primary school settings. Working on supply allows Primary Teaching Assistants to support pupils across a range of year groups, gain experience in different classroom environments, and maintain flexibility while contributing to pupils’ learning and wellbeing.

Duties as Primary Teaching Assistant:
  • Support class teachers with day-to-day classroom activities across EYFS, KS1, and KS2
  • Work with individuals and small groups to reinforce learning and support progress
  • Assist with classroom organisation, preparation of resources, and daily routines
  • Promote positive behaviour and support pupils’ social and emotional development
  • Provide additional support for pupils with SEND where required
  • Encourage pupil engagement, independence, and confidence in learning
  • Follow safeguarding procedures and school policies at all times
  • Support playground, lunchtime, and transition activities when needed
  • Provide feedback to teachers regarding pupil progress and engagement
  • Represent Step Teachers professionally while working as a Primary Teaching Assistant
Ideal Primary Teaching Assistant:
  • Previous experience working as a Primary Teaching Assistant or in a primary school setting
  • A positive, patient, and supportive approach to working with children
  • Confidence supporting pupils across different age groups and abilities
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Flexibility and reliability when working on supply
  • A proactive and adaptable attitude to classroom support
  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children
  • Ability to follow guidance and adapt quickly in new school environments
  • Enthusiasm for supporting learning as a Primary Teaching Assistant
