Position: Caseworker I/Social Service Worker- DCFS Northern Region (Clearfield, Ogden, and Brigham City)

Becoming a Caseworker I or Social Service Worker at the Utah Division of Child & Family Services (DCFS) offers a rewarding career where you can make a significant difference to children and families. The role focuses on ensuring children’s safety and family permanency through assessment, service coordination, and court reporting.

Key Responsibilities
  • Investigate reports of abuse, exploitation, and/or neglect; assess safety, risk, strengths, and barriers and determine appropriate actions governing a family's situation.
  • Work with families to create plans for children’s safety and for ongoing services.
  • Coordinate and refer services to community resources, placement providers, collateral agencies, the courts, and community partners.
  • Supervise visits between parents and children to ensure safety.
  • Conduct in-home visits to assess safety and track progress.
  • Facilitate Child and Family Team Meetings with the family, their formal and informal supports.
  • Testify in court hearings regarding actions, findings, procedures, and protocols.
  • Prepare detailed case documentation that includes intake records, investigation summaries, assessments of safety, risk and family functioning; service plans, court reports, case history and activity logs.
  • May include performing 24‑hour on‑call services as needed under supervisor's direction.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Previous or current employment with DHHS or related child welfare services, or a combination of experience and education equal to four years.
  • Equivalent full‑time experience if work was not full‑time (e.g., two years of half‑time work equals one year of full‑time).
  • Understanding of human development across the lifespan and community resources.
  • Ability to provide culturally responsive support and interventions.
  • Professional interaction skills with all levels of management while managing a diversified workload.
  • Sensitivity, tact, and professionalism in dealings with people.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Four years of full‑time education or professional work experience related to children, parents, and/or families, or a combination of education and experience equal to four years.
  • Current valid Utah driver’s license.
Caseworker I
  • Pay $23.60 per hour.
  • Must have a current valid Utah driver’s license.
Social Service Worker
  • Pay $26.21 per hour.
  • Holds an SSW or higher licensure in good standing (required by statute UCA
    58-60-103).
  • Must have a current valid Utah driver’s license.
Supplemental Information
  • Only applicants invited to interview will be notified.
  • May require 24‑hour on‑call services/time. Response time to be determined by the agency.
  • Department of Human Resource Management rules regarding promotions and transfers apply to current employees.
  • Travel required; personal vehicle may be needed; approved mileage reimbursable through State Finance.
  • All DCFS job offers are contingent upon passing a Background Screening Application (BSA).
  • Must have a valid Utah driver’s license.
  • Hybrid work eligibility subject to agency management discretion.
  • Employees must physically work inside the State of Utah boundaries.
Physical Requirements
  • Moderate physical exertion may be required: standing, walking over rough surfaces, bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, and lifting moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.).
Working Conditions
  • High risk environments, including potential physical attack, extreme outdoor weather, and dangerous locations.
  • Special safety precautions may be required when entering client homes or encountering contagious diseases, parasitic infections, chemicals, or illegal substances.
