Introduction

The Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) protects and promotes Wisconsin’s agricultural industries and consumers, ensuring safe, wholesome food; consumer protection and fair business practices; animal and plant health; a clean environment; and strong agriculture and commerce.

Remote Work Option

This position may allow up to 6 remote days per 2‑week pay period, subject to approval of a remote work agreement that meets operational needs. All remote employees must reside in Wisconsin.

Position Summary

This role provides services to help Wisconsin dairy food and agricultural businesses grow investment, production, processing, and technology adoption that add value to the dairy industry. Responsibilities include building the state’s agriculture economy by delivering business development assistance, research, technical seminars, and one‑on‑one consultations. The position reviews business plans, monitors market trends, helps businesses understand regulations, connects them with technical resources, and coordinates programs and communications related to the dairy sector.

It also serves as a consultant to dairy processors, farmers, and marketers, expanding domestic and international opportunities for Wisconsin dairy products.

Salary Information

Classified as Economic Development Consultant (schedule‑range 81‑03). Starting pay ranges from $36.00–$42.00 per hour ($74,880–$87,360 annually) based on qualifications. A 12‑month probationary period applies.

Job Details

Responsibilities include developing short‑ and long‑term goals for assigned program areas, measuring impact, collecting data, and preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual reports. Program leadership involves coordinating funding, communication, and outreach to state agencies, industry representatives, and service providers.

Conditions of Employment

DATCP does not sponsor work visas. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States and provide appropriate documentation. A criminal background check will be performed prior to offer. A valid driver’s license or personal transportation is required. Travel within Wisconsin (~50%) and occasional international travel may be needed, including obtaining a passport.

Qualifications
  • Experience as a dairy producer or processor, or providing professional consulting services to the dairy industry.
  • Experience developing and presenting on topics to stakeholders, translating complex information to non‑technical audiences.
  • Experience collaborating with internal and external stakeholders as a point of contact or business liaison.

Highly qualified candidates will have one or more of the following:

  • Experience managing or evaluating business plans, financials, or strategic development plans.
  • Experience interpreting and applying dairy requirements for exports, including market assessment and regulatory compliance.
  • Experience providing education, training, and technical assistance to dairy businesses.
