Telecom Substation Engineer
The Telecommunications Substation Engineer, PE is responsible for the engineering, design, and integration of substation telecommunications and control systems that support reliable electric transmission and distribution operations. This role serves as a technical lead and Engineer of Record for telecom-related substation systems, ensuring compliance with utility standards, industry codes, and regulatory requirements. The engineer will support projects from concept through construction, commissioning, and closeout while providing technical mentorship and coordination across disciplines.
ResponsibilitiesServe as Engineer of Record and maintain Responsible Charge for substation telecommunications and control system designs.
Perform engineering and design of substation telecom systems including fiber optic networks (OPGW, ADSS, underground fiber), relay protection communications, SCADA, RTU, and substation automation systems, LAN/WAN, MPLS, and IP-based utility networks, teleprotection schemes, and redundant communications paths.
Develop and review engineering deliverables such as one-lines, schematics, and wiring diagrams, cable schedules and fiber routing, equipment layouts, rack elevations, and interconnection diagrams, bills of material (BOMs), specifications, and technical reports.
Coordinate telecom designs with Protection & Control (P&C), Physical Substation, and Transmission Line engineering teams.
Perform or review engineering calculations and studies, including bandwidth and latency analysis, communications path redundancy and resiliency, equipment power requirements, and grounding considerations.
Interface with clients, vendors, contractors, and internal teams to support project execution.
Participate in field walkdowns, site surveys, construction support, and commissioning activities as required.
Review contractor submittals, resolve RFIs, and support construction issue resolution.
Ensure designs comply with applicable codes and standards (IEEE, NERC, IEC, ANSI, NEC, NESC, utility standards).
Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and designers.
Support continuous improvement of telecom and substation engineering standards and best practices.

Skills & Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, or related field from an accredited institution.
Professional Engineer (PE) license (active and in good standing).
Minimum 7–10 years of engineering experience in utility substations or telecommunications/protection controls environments.
Ability to take Responsible Charge and sign/seal engineering documents.
The office is an engineering office environment that is quiet in nature. Engineers will share an office with another engineer. The dress code is business casual. There is a laid‑back feel in the office. Teamwork is highly encouraged and happens frequently.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract position based out of Tulsa, OK.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $57.69 - $67.31/hr.
