Key Responsibilities

The Utah Department of Financial Institutions is looking for skilled and motivated individuals to fill Financial Institution Examiner I positions. Employees in this position will work in a team environment and examine financial institutions to determine their financial condition and compliance with applicable federal and/or state laws, regulations, and/or agency rules, standards, and guidelines.

Examiners are assigned to perform examinations at various institutions; including contact with officers, directors and employees, and preparing written and verbal reports. Use of a private vehicle, subject to reimbursement, to arrive at field sites is required. Examiners can spend an estimated 20% of their time traveling, including consecutive overnight travel, within and outside the state, to perform examinations and to attend training.

  • Conducting examinations; determining the nature, scope and direction of the examination, identifying potential issues, and compliance with state and federal laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Analyzing, summarizing, and/or reviewing data; reporting findings, interpreting results and/or making recommendations.
  • Writing or drafting correspondence, reports, documents and/or other written materials.
  • Reviewing preliminary examination findings with those being examined; preparing/overseeing the preparation of formalexamination reports; participating in or holding meetings to clarify, resolve and settle examination issues.

Information
  • Expected start date is June 29, 2026, but can be negotiated with hiring manager.
  • A salary increase will be given once the probation period (12 months) is successfully completed.
  • This position is part of a job series. A series promotion to a Financial Institutions Examiner II may be given after two years of successful performance as an Examiner I. After two successful years as an Examiner II, a series promotion to a Financial Institutions Examiner III may be given.
  • Risks found in the typical office setting, which is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated, e.g., safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations, etc.
  • Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying light items; driving an automobile, etc. Special physical demands are not required to perform the work.
  • DHRM rules regarding promotions and transfers apply to current state of Utah employees.
Qualifications Ideal Candidate
  • Knowledge of principles, theories, and practices of auditing and accounting.
  • Knowledge of financial markets, models, and banking.
  • Ability to communicate information and ideas clearly, and concisely, verbally and in writing.
  • Excellent judgment, logic, and tact.
  • Ability to compose and produce reports, documents, and related material using computer software.
  • Deals with people in a manner which shows sensitivity, tact, and professionalism in a team environment.
  • Ability to evaluate information against a set of standards.
Preference

Preference may be given to those who have a Bachelor's degree or higher in accounting, banking, finance or business administration/management and/or sufficient equivalent work experience.
