Location: Any of the following centers:
Boston MA, Philadelphia PA, Baltimore MD, Detroit MI, Ft. Lauderdale FL, San Jose/San Francisco Bay Area. The position may require some overnight travel throughout the year.
The North Carolina Department of Revenue (NCDOR) seeks a qualified individual to conduct independent examinations of financial records for taxpayers with unique or special audit features. Audits include complex and late cases involving Fortune 500 companies within the designated area. The auditor must review all tax schedules administered by the department, ensure compliance with statutes, and propose necessary adjustments.
Responsibilities- Perform complex and specialized audits of sales, use, and corporate tax returns.
- Justify and defend audit findings, providing a robust basis for adjustments.
- Communicate comprehensive information on complex matters concisely.
- Write detailed examination reports that inform changes and adjustments.
- Investigate beyond the tax return to identify understated taxes or overstated deductions.
- Collect and evaluate all pertinent facts and documentation.
- Exercise judgment on when to conclude an examination.
- Use a variety of accounting systems, including computerized and industry‑specific systems, to make complex tax determinations.
- Bachelor’s degree in business administration, economics, accounting, or related field with at least 18 semester hours of accounting from an accredited institution.
- Three years of experience as a Field Auditor or equivalent, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Demonstrated experience performing independent examination and analysis of sales, use tax, and complex corporate returns, statements, and systems.
- Comprehensive knowledge of state and federal tax issues, auditing and accounting theories, and principles.
- Experience justifying and defending audit findings.
- Extensive technical expertise working with large, complex (Fortune 500) taxpayers.
