- Ensure safety of students
- Follow the established and approved policies and guidelines of the Ontario Board of Education
- Report repair work needs to the building administrator and Director of Transportation and Maintenance. Routine repair work is the responsibility of the custodian and is not to be reported for the maintenance person to do
- Promote good safety practices and procedures
- Interact in a positive manner with staff, students and parents
- Secure the building each working day and ensure all lights (except security lights) are turned off and all persons are out of the building before leaving the premises
- Manage storage of tools and supplies; keep work and storage areas neat and orderly
- During hours when teachers and pupils are admitted to the building, cooperate with the Principal in maintaining proper physical conditions
- Display the United States Flag during the school day
- Receive and store all supplies and equipment, except educational supplies distributed to departments as directed by the building administrator
- Assist in unloading supplies delivered to the building
- In heavy snow, keep inside and outside walks plowed, shoveled, and salted if icy; ensure sidewalks and entrances are free from ice before the opening of school each day
- Ensure floors are mopped or cleaned to prevent slipperiness
- Cooperate with local and state fire inspectors, and with the boiler inspector
- Maintain annual inventory of janitorial supplies in March and provide this inventory to the Director of Transportation and Maintenance
- Note that this outline does not include annual summer work such as cleaning of windows or debris removal
- Assist the maintenance person if directed to do so
- Sweep floors daily in classrooms, corridors, stairways, libraries, gymnasiums, dining rooms, industrial arts rooms, toilet rooms, locker rooms, and offices; sweep closets at least weekly or as directed
- Dust furniture and woodwork (windowsills, baseboards, stair rails, doors, window frames, and corridor lockers) as required, allowing time for dust to settle after sweeping before dusting
- Mop floors in toilet rooms, locker rooms, and shower rooms daily; mop offices, stairways, and corridors weekly or as directed
- Mop or buff and rewax floors at least twice during the school year
- Refinish gymnasium floors only as directed
- Wash toilet bowls and urinals daily; treat with disinfectant weekly; clean wash basins and drinking fountains daily
- Properly dispose of inflammable waste daily in designated containers
- Care for playground area and prepare it for recess, emergencies, drills, etc.
- As may be assigned by the Superintendent, Building Principal or their designee
- High school diploma or equivalent
- One to two years related experience
- Basic knowledge of electrical, plumbing, and painting
- Ability to use most common hand tools
- Ability to use a computer to input information related to work
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Board of Education may find appropriate
- Knowledge of electrical and plumbing repairs
- Knowledge of appropriate safety procedures
- Training in the proper care and storage of chemicals, e.g., OSHA/PERRAC training
- Ability to read and understand verbal and written instructions, warnings and labels
- Working knowledge of assigned building and alarm systems
- Knowledge of how to repair a variety of materials, e.g., floor tile, wood, plastic, fiberglass
- Knowledge of air compressors/thermostats
- Various power tools, hand tools and plumbing tools
- Cleaning equipment including vacuum cleaners, wet/dry vac, floor scrubbers, stripping and buffers
- Floor waxing machine
- Snow removal and landscaping equipment
- Power washer
- Frequent exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissue
- Occasional operation of vehicle under inclement weather conditions
- Occasional interaction among unruly children
- Occasional climbing of ladders and stairs
- Frequent standing to perform repairs
- Occasional walking longer distances during duties
- Frequent repetitive hand motion (waxing, mopping, sweeping)
- Frequent exposure to noise from power tools and vacuums
- Occasional exposure to outdoor weather conditions
- Occasional need to push/pull items up to 300 pounds or lift up to 65 pounds
