Job Details and Qualifications

Clackamas County Sheriff s Office is seeking highly motivated, self-directed candidates with strong communication and interpersonal skills to create a pool of candidates eligible for current and future Jail Deputy, Recruit. Applicants must take the REACT written/video exam and transfer their scores to Clackamas County OR upload a transcript if they have a Bachelor s level degree or higher by the close date of the recruitment on March 2, 2026.

Testing is available through the National Testing Network (NTN) and can be completed online at home as well as several locations. The passing score for REACT is 65 for each section, including video, reading and count sections. Visa sponsorship is not offered. Applicants must be at least 21 years of age by date of employment. Responsibilities
  • Under close supervision, maintains order, discipline and security of inmates in County jail facilities; supervises the security and conduct of inmates in cells, during group meetings, meals, bathing, recreation, visitations, and on work assignments; performs routine internal security checks and assists Jail Deputies in performing perimeter and security checks throughout shift.
  • Answers routine inmate questions, conducts limited investigations, interviews witnesses, victims, complainants, seizes evidence, makes arrests, writes reports, testifies in judicial proceedings, and maintains records.
  • Supports processing activities including booking, fingerprinting, photographing, custody level assessment, medical screening, clothing and supplies issuance to new inmates; maintains inmate personal property; inspects living quarters for contraband and sanitary conditions.
  • Follows orders from medical staff in care of ill inmates; transports inmates to court, medical facilities, and other locations; performs hospital watches as required.
  • Operates the control room under direction to ensure secure access; ensures only authorized persons enter secure areas; conducts lobby checks for visitors, attorneys, investigators, and others.
Qualifications

Required Minimum Qualifications/Transferrable Skills:

  • Must be 21 years of age by the date of employment.
  • Must be a United States citizen or be one within eighteen (18) months of hire.
  • Must possess a high school diploma, GED, or bachelor degree from an accredited institution.
  • Must be free from convictions of a serious nature; must be willing to be fingerprinted and have fingerprints filed with the State.
  • Must meet DPSST requirements and be able to be certified as a Corrections Officer or Jail Deputy/Officer.
  • Must meet Oregon Administrative Rules (OARs) standards for visual, color, depth perception, and hearing acuity as specified in the job posting.
  • Must pass REACT exam requirements or provide proof of bachelor s degree; ability to communicate effectively and establish relationships; pass post-offer drug test and comprehensive background investigation; pass post-offer physical and psychological evaluations; valid driver s license and acceptable driving record.

Preferred Special Qualifications/Transferrable Skills:

  • Knowledge of criminal attitudes and behavior patterns; experience in correctional/detention facilities.

Working Conditions and Schedule

Duties are performed in a secured adult correctional facility with potential exposure to anger, harassment, and foul language. Jail Division schedule includes six 12-hour shifts and one 8-hour shift per two-week pay period; shift schedules are determined by seniority and the Peace Officer s Association contract.

Clackamas County offers an attractive compensation and benefits package, including annual pay of $77,061.83 and hourly pay of $37.048958; progression to Jail Deputy classification after successful completion of DPSST Academy and FTEP; comprehensive benefits, paid time off, retirement options, and wellness programs.
