GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
This position supervises offenders on parole or probation within constraints of Court and Parole Board orders and monitors their compliance with the conditions of their release. Performs investigations and prepares written reports and recommendations regarding individuals falling under the jurisdiction of the Court. Probation Deputies are expected to exercise considerable discretion and judgment in performing standard duties of supervising and monitoring the conditions of probation or parole.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
This position works under the immediate supervision of the Parole and Probation Sergeant and under the general supervision of the Community Corrections Lieutenant.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Supervision of other employees is not normally a responsibility of positions in this classification.

Essential Functions

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
(The following description of duties may not be all inclusive and other duties may be assigned at the discretion of management).
  • Direct, monitor and supervise adult offenders placed on probation and/or Post-Prison Supervision.
  • Conduct home, employment, office and collateral contacts relevant to offenders being supervised. Maintain regular contact with assigned offenders specifically through field visits.
  • Prepare and maintain records regarding needs and risk assessments, and make proper referrals to outside agencies as needed or required.
  • Develop and implement case plans for offenders as needed or required.
  • Ability to arrest, detain, search and transport offenders as necessary.
  • Conduct investigations and generate/submit reports to the Court or Board of Parole and Post-Prison Supervision.
  • Work with law enforcement, employers, family members and other community partners, to monitor offender behavior and to enhance opportunities for the offender to rehabilitate themselves.
  • Maintain accurate and complete files to include case management notes.
  • Complete all investigative reports and verify information by means of interviewing offenders, victims, witnesses and others.
  • Testify in Court when necessary.
  • Conduct criminal history inquiries via Law Enforcement Data Systems (LEDS) and other available law enforcement databases.
  • Participate in required defensive tactics and other related training.
  • Respond to public inquiries as it relates to the supervision of adult offenders.
  • Participate in various assigned committees and attend meetings as required.
  • Administer and observe urine and breath tests as necessary on clients.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Courteously meet and deal effectively with other employees, department heads, outside agency personnel and the public.
  • Regular physical attendance at the employer's facility is required.
May be required to work evenings, weekends and other times as may be assigned by the Parole and Probation Sergeant, Lieutenant or the Sheriff.

Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Must be able to legally work in the U.S.
Minimum age 21.
High School diploma or equivalency.
Must have or be able to obtain valid drivers' license.
Must be able to pass Pre-employment physical.
Must pass background check and drug test.
Must pass written exam as part of the application process.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Certified Parole and Probation Officer by DPSST within one year of hire; certified Law Enforcement Data Systems (LEDS); certified in First Aid and CPR. Must possess a valid drivers' license. This position requires the occasional use of a vehicle to conduct County business. Possession of a valid Drivers' License with a good driving history is required. A safe and acceptable driving record per County policy must be maintained throughout the course of employment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of: the adult criminal justice system, including sentencing, and parole and probation procedures. Knowledge of techniques used for encouraging permanent change in offender behavior. Knowledge of interviewing techniques and the use of evidence based practices. Must know modern office practices and have good computer skills.
