The Law Clerk provides support to litigation lawyers. The Law Clerk is responsible for preparing legal documents and researching law sources.

Key Responsibities

  • Research and analyze statutes, record judicial decisions and legal articles
  • Under the direction of a lawyer, resolves routine legal issues
  • Preparation of briefs, pleadings and appeals to be filed with various courts
  • Preparation of affidavit of documents, bills of cost, motions, etc.
  • Maintain updated list of motions for the Litigation department
  • Prepare assessments
  • Attend in court for assessment of costs
  • Address client inquiries as required
  • Daily preparation of dockets
  • Monitor and notify the Litigation department of any court form changes or updates
  • Monitor and notify the Litigation department of any updates to the Rules of Civil Procedure
  • Assist with other projects and support other departments as required
  • Qualifications

  • Minimum two year Law Clerk Diploma from college or suitable combination of education and experience
  • Minimum two years of litigation experience
  • Member of the Institute of Law Clerks of Ontario
  • Strong knowledge of Rules of Civil Procedure and Federal Court Rules
  • Relies on experience and sound judgment to plan and accomplish goals
  • Strong working knowledge of PC desktop tools such as word processing and e-mail
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and professional presentation
  • Skills Required

  • Ability to plan, organize and prioritize job tasks in order to meet tight deadlines
  • Ability to respond effectively and professionally to changes in schedules and priorities
  • Ability to ensure consistent attention to details
  • Ability to work independently within a team environment
