OverviewThe Elementary Principal (K‑5) is responsible for overseeing the total operation of the school. The incumbent performs the administrative functions specified by school law, board policy, and directives set forth by the Assistant Superintendent and Superintendent. The elementary principal duties also include serving as the instructional leader and maintaining a safe and positive school climate for students, teachers, and all auxiliary support staff and volunteers.
SupervisoryResponsibilities
- Oversee the daily management of the school and office.
- Oversee educators in the school, providing periodic observations and evaluations that are timely and constructive and completed based on the timetables set by the school district.
- Identify intellectual, physical, social and emotional needs affecting students’ success in school, and take steps to direct and coordinate the efforts of teachers and parents with staff services and special education personnel.
- Offer additional training and guidance as necessary based on evaluations of professional staff.
- Hire all faculty and staff for the school and preside over disciplinary meetings as necessary.
- Oversee, hire, and evaluate the performance of support staff.
- Ensure a productive learning environment through continual collaboration with teachers, students, and parents.
- Facilitate opportunities to connect with students by being present during arrival and dismissal, appearing at school functions, and meeting with students.
- Enforce disciplinary policies and procedures with students.
- Participate in parent meetings and conferences and act as intermediary between parents, teachers, and students to address needs or issues.
- Maintain competency and student academic achievement as prescribed by the school board.
- Preside over staff meetings.
- Ensure that necessary maintenance and repairs to the school property are performed.
- Coordinate staff development for faculty and staff; provide instruction if needed.
- Oversee the allocation of supplies and equipment.
- Oversee and implement the school budget, approving new programs and expenditures as appropriate.
- Represent the school in community activities and meetings.
- Interact with stakeholders to foster a positive relationship between the school and community.
- Act as liaison between the district and the school; communicate needs and information to both sides.
- Serve as the instructional leader for grades K‑4 responsible for student achievement and teacher evaluation.
- Collaborate regularly with other campus‑based and K‑12 leaders to ensure coherence of vision, program, and approach.
- Monitor and process personnel time records including leave requests and reports.
- Work with faculty and students to develop a student discipline management system that results in positive behavior and enhances the school climate.
- Create a school culture that promotes the ongoing improvement of learning and teaching for students and staff.
- Provide for school safety.
- Develop and lead school‑based teams in the improvement of instructional and procedural practices.
- Partner with the school community to promote student learning.
- Implement Board policies and administrative rules and regulations relating to the school’s function of operation, as directed.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent.
- Pennsylvania Elementary Principal K‑6 or K‑12 Principal certificate with a master’s degree.
