Job Summary

The NP Inpatient Medicine is a licensed, certified healthcare provider who renders direct patient care with prescriptive authority. The provider is credentialed, privileged, and billed as an independent provider by Medicare and Medicaid. Advanced Practice Providers deliver medical care based on the supervising physician's scope of practice. Inpatient Medicine providers typically work in hospitals, managing patients by rounding and handling admissions and discharges.

The Role
  • Assess the physical and mental condition of patients by performing comprehensive or problem‑focused physical examinations and obtaining medical histories.
  • Order, collect, interpret, and evaluate laboratory and other diagnostic tests to assess patient problems and healthcare needs.
  • Prescribe or recommend medical drug therapies or other therapeutic treatments. Perform procedures following approved protocols with a focus on efficacy, safety, and cost. Recommend interventions to change behavior linked to health risks.
  • Formulate and implement comprehensive patient treatment plans based on assessments, evidence‑based medicine, and standards of care. Collaborate with physicians and team members when appropriate. Evaluate patient’s response to care and its effectiveness.
  • Counsel patients and families about medical processes, illness management, medication, nutrition, and health promotion. Discuss drug regimens and possible side effects or interactions with food supplements, over‑the‑counter medications, and herbal remedies.
  • Maintain appropriate records detailing the patient’s treatment plans and outcomes. Initiate timely consultation and referral when the problem exceeds scope of practice or expertise.
  • Provide consultation‑level services for conditions or problems related to the provider’s specialty and training.
  • Perform invasive procedures specific to scope of practice (and provider aptitude) as delegated by the supervising physician.
  • May conduct hospital rounds, assist with admissions and discharges, and provide on‑call support.

  • Knowledge of information and techniques to diagnose and treat human injuries, diseases, and deformities, including symptoms, treatment alternatives, drug properties, interactions, and preventive health‑care measures.
  • Knowledge of practices, methods, and procedures for diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of physical and mental dysfunctions.

  • Skill in the use of computers and related software applications.
  • Ability to develop and implement comprehensive outcomes‑based patient treatment plans.

  • Ability to interpret and evaluate laboratory and other diagnostic tests.
  • Texas RN licensure or RN licensure with compact privilege from a state in the Nurse Licensure Compact for RNs and LVNs, and Texas APRN.
  • Current license to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in the state of Texas.
  • Certification from an accredited board as an APRN for the patient population of focus required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) within 30 days of hire or transfer.

  • Education:

    Graduate of an accredited program.
  • Experience:

    More than 1 year of experience.
  • Registered Nurse (RN) or Nurse Practitioner (NP).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) within 30 days of hire or transfer.
