The Electrician apprenticeship program is a four-year commitment designed to result in apprentices becoming Electricians. Participation in the program requires apprentices to attend courses provided by partnering educational institutions. Coursework is subject to a curriculum schedule and may require the apprentice to attend day or evening classes.
Apprentices perform a variety of unskilled tasks while learning to maintain, repair, and install electrical or electronic equipment and systems. Assignments are routine at the beginning of the program. As an apprentice knowledge and skill increase, the complexity of assignments increases until performance and technical ability are at the journey level. Apprentices will rotate yearly between the Public Works, Aviation, Street Transportation, and Water Departments.
No experience is required before starting the program. All required training is paid for and provided by the City of Phoenix while on the job and being employed full-time.
Job
Duties Include:
* Assisting a skilled Electrician by supplying materials, equipment, and tools at the scene at the job site.
* Participating in installing and removing of overhead and underground wires and cables.
* Assisting with the maintenance and repair of electrical fixtures and electrical or electronic controls and equipment 600 volts and below.
* Performing less difficult or routine installations and repairs of motors, generators, brush replacement, and bearings, and making connections or terminations on this equipment.
* Training to repair and replace all aspects of airfield lighting systems.
* Training to remove and replace 4,160-volt to 12470-volt breakers and maintain the associated switch gear.
* Demonstrating superior seamless customer service, integrity, and commitment to innovation, efficiency, and fiscally responsible activity.

Apprentices must successfully and satisfactorily complete all assigned classroom and equipment training. During this period of the program, apprentices will be non-classified and paid as an Electrician apprentice. After successful completion of the program, apprentices will be promoted into the Electrician classification, and serve a one-year City probationary period.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
Ability to:
* Comprehend mechanical concepts, perform math and algebra, think logically, and follow oral and written instructions.
* Use hand tools and perform work with manual dexterity.
Electrician Apprentice requires all the above, plus:
* Commitment to completing 8,000 hours of on-the-job training and a minimum of 900 hours of related technical instruction apprenticeship program.
SALARY
Apprentices are paid:
Starting Pay = $24.93/hr.
1,000 OJT hours = $26.18/hr. 5,000 OJT hours = $31.82/hr.
2,000 OJT hours = $27.49/hr. 6,000 OJT hours = $33.41/hr.
3,000 OJT hours = $28.86/hr. 7,000 OJT hours = $35.08/hr.
4,000 OJT hours = $30.31/hr. 8,000 OJT hours = $36.84/hr.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
* Ability to read and comprehend written material at a level appropriate for the class.
* Must:
* Be 18 years old
* Have a High School Diploma
* Successfully pass the apprentice aptitude test with an 80% score or better.
* Successfully complete the physical agility assessment.
* Be able to perceive the full range of the color spectrum.
* Working irregular hours, second and/or third shifts, weekends, holidays, overtime, and evenings may be required.
* Requires:
* Maintaining regular and reliable attendance.
* Working at heights greater than 10 feet.
* Move heavy objects (50 pounds or more) long distances (more than 20 feet).
* Working in small, cramped areas such as ceiling crawl spaces, equipment enclosures, and closets.
* Working outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, and dust.
