Job Description

The Instructional Para educator assists in the supervision, care, and instruction of students with special needs in regular or special education settings under direct supervision of a Special Education Teacher.

May work with students in Early Childhood, Elementary, Secondary, resource rooms, or with speech and school psych providers; assist students with mild to moderate disabilities, including deaf/hard of hearing, visual impairments, etc.

Responsible to

Special Education Teacher, District Administration; SEK 637 Administration.

Experience

Job-related experience is desired.

Education/Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent. Must have 48 college hours or qualifying score on Master Teacher Online Exam within first 90 days of employment, and 20 hours per year of in-service training. All para educator positions are considered non-exempt, at-will positions.

Wages

Based on hourly rate, number of days worked, and completion of required trainings (9‑month school calendar).

Essential Functions
  • Adapts and provides accommodations of classroom activities; assignments and/or materials under the direction of the teacher.
  • Aids students in and out of classroom (e.g., packing backpacks, note taking, relationship building, field trips, social skills).
  • Assists students requiring supports in addressing personal care needs due to medical condition and/or physical limitations.
  • Participates in trainings (education strategies, disability education) to meet state requirements.
  • Collaborates with staff to provide necessary support and information related to student’s progress as established in the Individual Education Plan.
  • Creates visual aids based on the level of the student’s visual impairment.
  • Implements educational and behavioral programming under the supervision of certified staff.
  • Assists students with challenging and/or aggressive behaviors in accordance with policies and IEP.
  • Instructs students in a variety of activities in individual and group settings within the general education building.
  • Maintains instructional materials and data sheets to ensure availability and accurate records.
  • Monitors students during assigned periods within a variety of school environments and/or community environments.
  • Assists in establishing a positive learning environment and responds to individual needs.
  • Works cooperatively and demonstrates effective interpersonal relationships with other paras, professionals, community agencies, and other groups.
  • Safeguards confidential information and observes confidentiality requirements.
  • Uses appropriate behavior management techniques to maintain a positive climate for learning.
  • Faithful daily attendance and adherence to work schedules.
  • Observes all district and interlocal policies during activities.
  • Restricts cell phone usage to break and lunch times.
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned, to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the educational team.

Minimum Qualifications

Skills, knowledge, and ability requirements are outlined:

Skills: Adhering to safety practices, operating standard office equipment, using software applications, preparing and maintaining accurate records, and using crisis intervention techniques.

Knowledge: Basic math, reading and following instructions, understanding complex written and oral instructions, instructional procedures and practices, age-appropriate activities, safety procedures, conflict resolution, child development/behavior stages, safe handling of blood-borne pathogens, crisis de-escalation techniques.

Ability: Scheduling activities, collecting data, using basic equipment, working with diverse individuals, problem solving, communicating/collaborating with diverse groups, maintaining confidentiality, setting priorities, working as a team, handling interruptions, taking constructive feedback.

Physical Requirements /Environmental Conditions

Walking, sitting, standing, lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, fine finger dexterity. May require some travel, indoor/outdoor work year‑round, and operation in noisy, stressful, crowded environments.
